Nothing at all, GD, unless he comes from St Andrews, makes occasional appearances in punk / folk / kletzmer hybrid act Oi Va Voi and somehow manages to look drop-dead sexy in leg-warmers as well?

February 6, 2005 at 08:30 #90263Everyone has finally caught on to The Killers by all accounts, and rightly so, but I think that the truly big band in that style this year will be another American bunch called The Bravery, who released Unconditional late last year which frankly was brilliant but didn’t get nearly enough air play, someone has caught on though and their new single Honest Mistake is getting a lot more attention. The Killers are at the stage where they have already released/rereleased their best stuff whereas these guys are very much poised to make the most of what they’ve got, so this could be their year.
February 6, 2005 at 19:51 #90264Sophia are pretty good also from what i’ve heard of them.
Not sure who i’ll be seeing next but probably Kaiser Chiefs if i can get a ticket.
Martin
ps. really like The Killers album.
February 6, 2005 at 21:25 #90265I LOVE The Killers album, but I’m totally addicted to American Idiot (album, not single) by Green Day at the moment, If I’m not listening to it, I’m singing it. It’s inspired! The bass bit at the end of Boulevarde of Broken Dreams sends chills down my spine!
I’m getting into Bloc Party too. They’re gonna be huge this year I think.
February 6, 2005 at 23:06 #90266Green Day are one of those bands I quite like without ever having felt the urge to go and buy a CD. ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ is a good single, but just sounds a bit too Avril for my liking. I like Avril but just feel Green Day shouldn’t sound THAT much like her!
I actually bought a single the other day! Not my usual thing but there is no sign of a Delays’ album and the aforementioned ‘Lost In A Melody’ has steadfastly refused to leave my audio-cortex (if that exists)…
February 7, 2005 at 00:14 #90267I’m afraid that after decades of delighting in digging out new musical talent nearly as much as I delighted in digging out new racing talent, I seem to have lost the plot and have precious little to add on this subject now.
But after graysonscolumn has shown such a fine appreciation of Boards of Canada, Divine Comedy and Magnetic Fields (amongst many) on this and other threads I have to say that I intend following what he has to say very closely hereafter.

February 7, 2005 at 06:10 #90269NV how can you mention Avril and Green Day in the same sentence? :o Buy the album, turn it up LOUD and lose yourself in the bass. Wonderful!
I’ve posted this in Ian’s thread but you may as well have it here too. It’s System of a Down’s teaser from their forthcoming album……Just a warning though…..boot out the kids before you listen to it!

February 22, 2005 at 12:54 #90270Bloc Party suck live.
Le Tigre are just becoming popular, although they’ve been around for about six years. I’ve heard them being played in Topshop, and on a advert with Jamie bleeding Oliver. This is all much to my discust. Pfft.
The Kaiser Chiefs are amazing, so are The Bravery. Rilo Kiley are also one of my new favourites.
I was in a lift with The Zutons in Japan last year. Their hotel room was just down the corridor from mine at the Fuji Rock fest. Also met the Killers out there who were in the same hotel also. I like the Killers, even though they’re a bit… poppy mainstream sounding, and i’ll get slapped for liking them by a few folk i know, but well… i’ve always liked them and i shall not stop.
The Kills have a new album out, and are just becoming more recognised. I prefered their debut album, but the new one is tipped a lot so i’ve heard.
Watch out for a girl punk band called Pony Up! They’re like the Donnas, but much more fun.
Out with Emo.

The new Le Tigre stuff isn’t as good as the first two albums IMHO – "TKO" was a very underwhelming first single off "This Island". It would be very lazy and convenient of me to ally this dip in form to them having now moved a major label and been given some proper money to play with this time around, but I doubt it’s wholly coincidental.
I saw them play in Bristol last April, and the songs off the then-forthcoming new album didn’t go down at all well comparatively. The irreverent cover of the Pointer Sisters’ "I’m So Excited" curried a bit more favour with most, but irritated me – they’re better than that.
"Decepticon", "Keep on Living", "Whats Yr Take on Cassevetes", "Hot Topic" etc etc all still kicked mighty ass, though, and their movie show backdrops behind the stage make me giggle.

February 28, 2005 at 16:52 #90272A pal of mine came into college not long ago and proclaimed that she had bought a ticket to see the Killers in Cambridge, and then they were sold out. Somehow I had completely forgotten about this. I swore. Then she went to the gig and came back raving and I swore a bit more. Then today I realised that the bloody Kaiser Chiefs had been supporting and I swore incredibly loudly.
I was quite jealous.
February 28, 2005 at 21:48 #90273I’m jealous too. The Killers CD is the one I have permanently on in my car CD player at the moment, and I’d love to see them live! They keep going on about how good they are live on Radio 1 too which doesn’t help.
February 28, 2005 at 22:10 #90274Speaking of radio 1 and the Killers, did anyone else hear that live lounge cover of Somebody Told Me by that phenomenal pillock Daniel Bedingfield?
My God, it was enough to make you want to sacrifice your ears to the dark gods. Whoever they are. It was bad, basically.
Urgh.
Kaiser Chiefs. Well….at first I liked the song and saw the vid and thought the frontman was clearly a Kapranos clone, but over the last week I’ve become thoroughly obsessed and have forgiven him for his eyelinered posing, because frankly they’re fabulous.
And I would like to make it known that I, Zoz of TRF, would hereby like to offer my services as groupie slut exclusively to one Sam Endicott from the Bravery, who is possibly the hottest male I’ve ever seen in my entire life and as long as he’s around I don’t know if I need to see any others.
March 1, 2005 at 06:14 #90275Yes I heard that cover Zoz! Awful! His ego’s so huge he thinks he can pull anything off, but he just ruined it.
Ooooh I heven’t seen the guy from the Bravery! I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled…
March 2, 2005 at 12:45 #90276Ok, so he’s not strictly a band but he’s fantastic. Everyone go and buy Willy Mason’s album "Where the humans eat". Play it once and you think that was different, play it a second time and you begin to get it, play it a third time and the penny drops, it’s brilliant and you can’t get enough of it. Apparently he’s really young but his lyrics and voice are that of an old timer !
March 2, 2005 at 21:50 #90277Anyone know anything about the following acts.
I Am Kloot
Idlewild – the new stuff especially
K T Tunstall – sounds good but any more details are appreciated.
I’m off to do gig reviews for the University magazine all on University Students Union complimentary tickets which should be nice.
Also got to review a single by a band called Fans of Kate if anyone has heard of them.
Thanks
Martin
