I’d like to nominate The Zutons, The Departure, Bloc Party and The Arctic Monkeys.
Was tempted to nominate The Bandits but they split 5 months ago :(
How about others?
They’re amazing IK, saw them at The Leadmill on halloween – ripped the place to shreds me and my mate where bouncing off the ceiling by the time they left the stage (about 11.30pm) but they didn’t come on till about 10:45, had some kool support bands also.
My mate reaves about the Kaiser Chiefs – likes to think he knows his new bands (some are good others are appalling) though he’s not heard of Duke Ellington or Wizard (i don’t think). lol.
The Killers have played Sheffield 3 times since i started uni and i ain’t seen them once :(, are you going to that NME Shockwaves tour by any chance????

December 9, 2004 at 14:19 #90251I’m sure the Zutons came to Exeter but I’m not into that sort of music so I obviously missed it!

December 11, 2004 at 05:08 #90256The Zutons are fantastic , although I am now interested to hear how The Killers and Bloc Party compare.
The ‘ new ‘ music scene is at a pretty high standard at the moment , with the likes of Franz Ferdinand , Keane , Snow Patrol and Athlete still going strong.
Just one point though Martin – Flip n bloody fill ?! You need a switch from Gatecrasher to God’s Kitchen or Slinky my friend ! Once you are graced with the presence of Ferry Corsten , you’ll never look back ! We had Ferry and JFK ( played a phenomenal set , rounded off with the classic that is Good God ) at Creation in Bristol , before it was bought out – pure class.
December 11, 2004 at 11:43 #90257I’m sure we’ve been through my logistical problems of getting to God’s Kitchen before lol.
Flip N Fill were amazing, well my mate said they were.
Not seen The Killers live but they were about the same as Bloc Party IMO. But did see The Zutons along with Dogs Die In Hot Cars (have done some wicked stuff – i love you coz i have too).
Got chav night at uni tonight, addidas tracky, fake burberry cap and bling all at the ready.
Hope to go and see Yousef when i get home at Cream (if it’s still open) were he’s a resident.
December 17, 2004 at 14:57 #90258I have to admit that I don’t get The Zutons, who sound a bit like The Commitments might have sounded if they’d had to write their own songs. However, loads of people genuinely seem impressed by them, so that’s probably just me.
I agree with Zoz about the Delays‘ single which is very 80s but edgy and with a fab analogue Daft-Punk-esque synth line.
I really liked some of the Finch album (although I guess that’s over a year ago now), and yes, I must be getting old and sadly obsessed with 80s pop, because I love the Scissor Sisters’ album, even if they seem intent on releasing every other track as a single.
Keane impressed me a lot at first, but is being horribly overplayed and I only really listen to Bend And Break and Bedshaped nowadays.
And this is all horribly mainstream, but I also really rate the Franz Ferdinand album – Take Me Out was one the most impressive and taking debut singles in a long while for me.
Still, it could be worse – the first LP I bought was Bridge Of Spies by T’Pau…
December 17, 2004 at 23:19 #90259NV, don’t worry about getting old i consider Rasputin by Boney M as a classic track for dancing to (then again i do frequent Flares a lot).
Also like The Distillers (well what i’ve heard from them via XFM’s sessions online) though they aren’t new.

February 6, 2005 at 00:38 #90260Hiya,
New bands / acts I like? Hmm, tricky.
I despise most of the generic sludge laughingly passed off under the misappropriated "indie" tag by the Evening Session and its ilk, although the Zutons are reasonable enough as new acts go. The bits of sax and edgy energy are enough to separate them from a lot of the depressed no-marks in overcoats.
But I much prefer the less-heralded Grand National, dance-tinged alternative pop with the occasional nod to the musical past. "Cherry Tree" has the sort of chorus Boney M wouldn’t have snubbed.
Speaking of cherry trees, I also rate singer-songwriter K T Tunstall, whom you may have seen doing "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on Jools Holland before Christmas. Strong voice, reasonable guitarist, and a headrush loop sampler pedal which she uses to create impromptu backing for herself most creatively. Patti Smith and Polly Harvey would be obvious comparisons, but rather lazy ones.
German quartet Wir Sind Helden do that rarest of things – ape Catatonia, No Doubt and Nena without sounding sh*te. Judith Holofernes is a rare axe heroine from a country where big-haired power balladeers, peerless clanky electronic music and nearly as many boy bands as we have here are more prevalent.
Finally for now, The Real Tuesday Weld combine the dry wit of The Magnetic Fields with the Flaming Stars’ bar-room swagger and a knowing appreciation of easy listening sensibilities. Their debut album sets the novel "I, Lucifer" to music and does so sumptuously.
