Was it Matt Chapman, who asked A P O,BRIEN, if Colin Keane would be his new stable jockey ?. for me it should be Oisin Murphy ASAP. or after a poor coronation cup this lot on here would have the rocking horse jockey Dwyer lol.And is Moore as bad as Spencer.  :good:

I’d go for Paul McKenna or Mystic Meg, they would at least have a fightng chance of getting on the stables number one.

Bit harsh on Ryan. No way they could have predicted that. Snowfall shouldn’t have like the ground being by deep impact and Seamie really fancied divinely. Mick kinane was on hawk wing v high chaparral. Remember Ryan was being lauded to the heavens for his ride on snowfall in the Musidora. He’ll be on snowfall next time I’m sure.

Have to say IMHO there is no outsatnding jockey at the minute like a Piggot/Carson/Eddery bar of course Frankie who is different class.
They are all as poor as each other.

Have to agree. I’m struggling to think of a jockey anywhere near as good as lester or pat eddery. Even Frankie I think is the best of a poor bunch. Snowfall was so superior I don’t think it matters who rode her.

Agree, I believe the standard of riding on the Flat has been poor for some time now. Dettori is head and shoulders above the rest.

From a selfish point of view, I quite like James Doyle because he seems to be lucky for me but I am not going to say he is a great jockey.

I look back to when I was first interested in racing when there were jockeys like Piggott, Eddery, Carson, Mercer, Swinburn, Starkey and Cauthen. Would some of today’s leading jockeys have ridden 100 winners in a season in that era? I doubt it.

In his interview last Sunday, Willie Carson rated Steve Cauthen ahead of Piggott and Eddery as the strongest jockey he ever rode against.

Piggott and Eddery were both known for their whip. Suspect under the rules of today Carson, Cauthen and Mercer would’ve made better jockeys.

Think Moore has suffered from going to Coolmore, doubt he’s allowed to do what he wants. But he’s better than many armchair jockeys make out. If totalling up the chances of Ballydoyle second, third, fourth, fifth etc strings in big races… Their combined chance is pretty significant, often rivalling or even more chance than the Coolmore first string ridden by Moore! Of course he’s going to be on the wrong one many many times – it’s just simple mathematics. Especially when – after jockey bookings have been made – the going goes against his “chosen” chance.

Frankie and Ryan are the top two, with Buick imo not that far behind and why the …. De Souza didn’t get the rides he deserved baffled me. So for Frankie read Cauthen, for Ryan read Piggott, Buick – Carson and De Sousa – Mercer…

It’s not that much different to when I were a laaad.

When judging today’s jockey era against others it’s Vitally important to remember rides were seldom analysed in the 1970’s and 80’s… Technology and punters knowledge of pace and sectional times has also greatly improved. Would we really have recognised a poor ride in years gone by as easily as we do now?

    I think not.

Agree with GT. Some of this smacks of the ‘In my day things were much better…..’ notalgia many people apply to many sports.

I agree there is a danger of viewing the past through rose tinted glasses. But I do believe that era in the 1970s to mid 80s was very strong.

Only a matter of time before Colin Keane becomes stable jockey at Ballydoyle, will be able to ride work daily when the job is his. Ryan Moore is riding as well as ever but the stage has been set in the last cpl of years

Maybe the way we should look at it is who were the best at getting on the right horse ….On that score Lester was in a league of his own , he gave no thought of giving of a owner a bloody nose if he thought he could get on a better horse in a race , it’s that nasty winning streak , Dunwoody once got 2 tickets driving to an evening meeting to jock off a lad on a walk over in the first race …..Moore is stuck as he has no where else to go while having to ride what the boys say …no wonder he,s so quiet and miserable

Pat smullen turned down the job and I’m sure many are wary of taking it due to the pressure of the job. Frankie has the best of both worlds. Called up when needed with a horse with a chance and no pressure. Seamie seems the only constant there. 35 group ones. Not bad for a no 2.

I don’t know where this fallacy of Ryan Moore not choosing comes from. I’m sure he takes advice, especially in COVID times, but he has the final choice.

I’m sure Colin Keane or any other jockey would have chosen Santa Barbara yesterday given the choice
Just because she lost didn’t mean she was the wrong choice before the race. Best chance of winning going by the odds, form, potential? trainer comments etc.
Still waiting for a thread to start before a race saying Moore has chosen the wrong one.
