Could be a result of the whispers that on his way to winning, Faugheen will carry Rathvinden in to the straight to ensure a 1-2 for Mullins.

There was a very positive word for him at the Belfast preview night with Gordon Elliott. See it as a bit of a Wicklow Brave scenario in the Supreme, money for second string based on whispers, very good horse, but not fit to lace the boots of the first team
March 7, 2014 at 14:01 #470329I’ve mentioned this horse a few times over the past couple of weeks after his run behind Irving in the Dovecote at Kempton in February. I thought it was a really encouraging run after a long break due to injury. He was never going to threaten Irving, clearly being given a very tender ride by McCoy and running on well at the end. I thought the race was simply meant to get him ready for whatever his next target was, and I thought there was a very good chance he would be missing Cheltenham and being aimed at Aintree. However he is still entered in the Neptune, and 50/1 is freely available.
As there is no risk of losing the stake if he doesn’t run, I can’t think of any reason not to have an e/w on him. If he does run, he won’t be half that price. I think this is a seriously good horse.
March 7, 2014 at 21:58 #470374I love Cup Final (what a pedigree!) but he doesn’t look like the finished article yet. He pulls pretty hard for a horse who doesn’t have the pace to go with the best novices at two miles. I think he will come into his own over further in time, but his mind might not be ready yet.
March 7, 2014 at 23:47 #470393Smashed a bit too much on Royal Boy. I am now beginning to doubt myself, niggling about his earlier novice form, also not sur if him and Josses can both be that good they way the fought out the last race. So i’ve had a cover on Faugheen. I think this might be a "caught out" race for me…….
Now beginning to suspect Rathvinden is underated and the win for Red Sherlock is better than I first realised. CONCERNED.

I agree with you Young Fella, he is a lovely horse and well bred. I watched the race again (Dovecote Novices) in case I had missed something first time round, and I’ll give you he was a little free at the start of the race but I thought that he settled well after that. I’m not so sure he doesn’t have the pace, I think it most certainly was the case that he both badly needed the race and a confidence booster, after getting a bad gash in his leg on his previous run.
McCoy didn’t ask him for an effort at any time in the race, even when the tempo quickened the last couple of furlongs, but without being asked he was running on strongly into third and I think that was all he was set out to do.
You may be right that he could improve over further, and that being the case the extra distance in the Neptune should be right up his street, but I think it’s more a case of being fitter for the race, he would be a different proposition even over 2 miles, especially at Cheltenham with the finish up the hill over the last furlong.
As I said previously, I had thought he might get put away until perhaps Aintree or Punchestown, but he is still entered in the Neptune, and if he is showing further progress at home I wouldn’t rule out Henderson having a tilt at this. I’m not waiting until he is confirmed, I’m certain that the 50/1 will disappear like snow off a dyke if he is. At worst I’ll get my money back and have a go at something else if he doesn’t turn up.
March 11, 2014 at 11:19 #470801Woohoo !!!!!…… Cup Final is a definite runner. I hope some took the 50/1 that was on offer yesterday, he is a best priced 33/1 at Stan james, generally 20/1 and as low as 16/1.
I know I’m banging the same drum as before, but I think this will turn out to be a very good horse. Still worth a punt at those prices.
March 11, 2014 at 22:16 #471018I’ve narrowed it down to four…
Faugheen
Red Sherlock
Rathvinden
Lieutenant Colonel…and decided on Rathvinden.
Good luck all.

Nearly pulled it iff, that Faugheen’s not too bad
Nathan ‘knew’!
March 12, 2014 at 14:05 #471198Yeah nearly and Glens Melody nearly pulled it off aswell yesterday. I reckon Mullins trys to get dead heats as it will give him more Festival winners.

March 12, 2014 at 14:25 #471199Wonder if Faugheen, with all his talent will become another Mikael D’ can’tspellhisname? Seems to be difficult to keep sound.
March 12, 2014 at 14:29 #471201Interesting train of thought that Moehat, was thinking something similar myself.
Time will tell.Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 13, 2014 at 19:41 #471568Very interesting that Mullins stated immediately after Faugheen sauntered in, when asked to compare the two, that Vautour was on "a different level" to Faugheen.
Quite a statement.
