The trainer wasn’t exactly waxing lyrical about Faugheen’s chances in the Post today. Maybe he’s just playing down expectations but I’d have expected a more upbeat update on one of his Festival hotpots.
February 24, 2014 at 15:48 #469030No mention of Deputy Dan?
Very impressive in putting the trial at Warwick to bed between the third and second last hurdles and left a toiling Splash Of Ginge behind in third.

Faugheen could definitely brush up on his jumping. However he had to make his own running last time and was keen enough, I’d say that didn’t help his jumping at all. Also, I don’t think his jockey that day is great at offering a horse assistance in the jumping department. The best he’s jumped was over 2m 4f at Navan, and even that wasn’t a mistake free round, but he winged the last when Ruby asked him to. There’s no doubting his engine though: he’s a machine as far as I’m concerned but his jumping is definitely a bit of a worry.
The word coming from Mullins isn’t great either: apparently he hasn’t been in great form and Mullins has changed his feed. I’ve had a few ante post bets on him and just hope he makes it now.
February 24, 2014 at 18:59 #469054I watched faugheen race last time no doubt he has a engine. Was just worried about his jumping like you say i think a quicker pace may help.Where he dosent have as much time to think about it.It looks a good race.Red sherlock beat a mullins hotpot last time so surely mullins has got a idea about the second favourite?.

Wish I’d backed Royal Boy when I initially picked him out at 14’s, bloody pricewise has muggged me off for odds the b*stard! Will still back him but at around 13/2 it’s a lot less than I was hoping for.

There’s still time to change your mind Ben

Haha to be totally honest I’ll probably end up doing a Faughenn/AnniePower/BobsWorth treble as a saver with the latter 2 being my bankers of the festival. I just don’t think Faugheen will bridle his whole way to the finsih and thus think another can get the better of him in a battle!

Much of my Faugheen bullsh1t is tongue in cheek at this stage so don’t put much pass on me anyway
Bobs Worth and Annie Power would be on my shortlist if I do any accas as well, as will Felix Yonger in the JLT and Briar Hill in the Bartlett (and Faugheen of course)

Been looking at this race again today, and at the prices, I’m leaning towards Faugheen! Realised I initially liked Royal Boy as he was 14/1, now being between 8’s and 7’s he doesn’t look quite so tempting, I just don’t think Red Sherlock will be quick enough so discount him.
Wasn’t overly impressed with Faugheen (looked to be going quite slow) at Limerick, but the ground seemed to be very testing that day and all the others behind him looked even slower so can be forgiven. I was most impressed with his Navan win where he showed great cruising speed and a very impressive turn of foot to scoot 4-5 lengths clear within a matter of seconds, he only did what he had to to win that day and I suspect could have won by 10+ lengths if Ruby wanted to.

The ground was like the Bog of Allen that day in Limerick alright, and as you say although he looked to be going slow, the likes of Azorian were bottomed trying to go with him. The form of the Navan race is nothing special but Empire Of Dirt is a solid 130 horse and he couldn’t have beat him any easier.
There’s been nothing but negativity about him from Mullins Snr though. The past two years he’s hyped up Boston Bob and Pont Alexandre (who had excuses) no end but he’s been very conservative about Faugheen in recent weeks. Has he learned his lesson after those disappointments? There’s nothing between Rathvinden and Red Sherlock on form but Faugheen is rated as different bisto to that animal. As I’ve said, I just hope he gets there as he’s not the soundest!

I’d almost be happier with Mullins being quiet about the horse rather than bullish, makes it seem like he’s keeping his cards close to his chest, doesn’t want to overhype a horse before he knows quite how good it is himself! The horse is certainly growing on me!

If you look at the picture closely enough you might be able make out Josses Hill way down in front of the trees
March 1, 2014 at 23:22 #469659The reason he is being pushed out is to overtake and lap the tailenders……

March 2, 2014 at 07:58 #469679Assuming Faugheen wins pulling a cart with his head in his chest, what will be his target in 2015?
March 2, 2014 at 12:42 #469706Willie will have about 4 or 5 options lined up for him………
