…the first winter-contract UK visitor to do so on a domestic card in quite a while.

started at 49/1 and after drawing blanks in the first six races drifted out to 149/1.

then won races 8 (9/1), 9 (17/1) and 10 (5/1) to grab victory from the by-then 1/7 fav and umpteen times HK champion jockey Douglas Whyte.

[the Jockey Challenge operates per meeting on a fixed-odds basis revised after each race up to the jump of the third-last race, with 12pts for riding the winner, 6pts for second and 4pts for third.]

    notable achievement.

A hugely talented and underrated jockey.

    Well done on him.

Callan also had a highly successful season in the UK despite Varian terminating his services as stable jockey

now staying in HK until this season ends 6 July.

and may apply for a full-season licence for next season, starting early September:

in the four months since 21 Oct his mounts have won HKD 16.3m (GBP 1.25m) in stakes.

racing one afternoon and one evening a week.

    when not suspended.

according to the RP that’s more than he won in GB in any of the past five years, racing seven days a week, when not suspended.

[ HK income tax rate max 17 per cent – though might be tight for him to claim non-UK-tax-residence for 2013/14.

no VAT, since no EU to support].
