Bewley’s Berry is my early fancy and I’ve been burgling all the 20/1 over here for a week or two now. Point Barrow was my ante-post punt last year. Generally I find it doesn’t pay to give horses second chances (of course I am with BB) but he’s tempting- I’ve watched last year’s RUK replay many times and I can’t see his fall: did he really fall or did he unseat, and did he get very far back before the fence? Did he carry on riderless afterwards? I fancy a really dark ‘un too but I’m not on yet…..
February 5, 2008 at 21:24 #140469I’ve backed Mon Mome at 100/1 ew with Boylesports. His form points to him needing give but his 2nd in last year’s Welsh National, amongst other good performances in staying races, puts him in the mix and 100/1 seems a massive price.
Now somebody tell me he’s injured
February 5, 2008 at 23:26 #140498No encouragement in recent runs but the 10-12 for L`Ami could just be a
bit risky.Like a few others, I thought Comply or Die looked nicely in if
his last race was a reliable indicator of well being. The weights look quite
nice for Cloudy Lane,Idle Talk, Kilbeggan Blade. As usual I haven`t
given the Irish entries enough of a look yet.February 6, 2008 at 00:05 #140508now that Hot Weld is out for the season Joe’s Edge will probably be Ferdy Murphy’s main hope; I really fancied him last year, but supposedly he boiled over during the preliminaries, and it won’t help if the National is his first race of the season.Point Barrow just overjumped the first fence last year. .It’s difficult to work out which horses have been entered for the sake of it and which ones are intended to run eg Ursumman last year.L’Ami seems to the right boxes other than the fact that he may not quite see out the trip, Longshanks jumping was a masterclass last year and if he makes it to the race this time he so deserves to sneak a place.
February 6, 2008 at 00:17 #140512I quite like looking for the most ridiculous entry. At present, I don’t think I’ve got a dafter or more pointless one than Contraband.
February 6, 2008 at 12:29 #140607Hi all, some interesting points being put forward as you would probably expect.
I myself will be looking closely at Simon, Joe Lively, Royal Auclair and Cloudy Lane although i see Pricewise has put a spanner in the works with the latter named.
Cheers for now.
Adrian.

As much as I don’t set out to do it, I always end up looking at a couple like that to see where any of their form suggests the slightest inkling towards 4m4. Foreman has to be the one for me, 11st6 to lug around 15f farther than he’s ever been before!
February 6, 2008 at 14:46 #140646narrowed it down to a short list of errrr 33…..but do fancy Over the Creek and Bewleys Berry – also must back Point Barrow; would feel awful if, having backed him last year he came out and won this year…do agree with Comply or Die, but there must be an Irish horse lurking about somewhere that nobodies noticed..could it be Ursumman???
Chelsea Harbour 33/1
I like Bewleys Berry and McKelvey but will wait nearer the time will back Chelsea Harbour Ante-Post!!
February 6, 2008 at 14:54 #140649i like nautin brook this year going off the weights also bewleys berry

Michael Hourigan rather gave the game away, when in his reaction to the National weights he concluded:
"He’s not entered at Cheltenham, so after Sunday it’s either Aintree or Fairyhouse. But i’d hate for anything to happen to him."
February 6, 2008 at 16:47 #140683so itll be fairyhouse then, so expect the weight to rise when he is pulled out

February 6, 2008 at 18:12 #140711Surely must be a significant doubt about Cloudy Lane’s stamina? In his 2 tries at more than 3m he " Weakened after 2 out, tailed off" in last year’s Red Square GC at Haydock, then "weakened 4 out" in the Irish National. Wouldn’t be for me.
February 6, 2008 at 19:15 #140741what can anyone tell me about Royal County Star? is he the Irish dark horse, Chelsea Harbour being 8 which, to my mind is a year too young to win it. Is Mon Mome a definate to run? thought he was the horse of Venetias that she said was a bit too small to run in the National, but may be confusing him with another horse.

From the Sporting Life:
Venetia Williams (Mon Mome 10st 8lb, Nirvana Du Bourg 10st 2lb, Flintoff 9st 11lb, Pass Me By 9st 10lb, The Outlier 9st 7lb): "Mon Mome is the obvious one of mine who looks like he’s got a shout of running."He’s not been out this year yet but we are hoping he’ll reappear some time in the next fortnight, maybe over hurdles.
"We were thinking about the National last year, but we left it for this time. He’s got a nice mark, and a nice little chance."
February 6, 2008 at 21:02 #140775what can anyone tell me about Royal County Star?
He can’t jump.

Tom Segal tipped Cloudy Lane up today, arguing that his stamina has improved this term for more patient tactics, but he also admitted that Donald McCain’s main hope didn’t stay the heavy 3m4 at Haydock, hiding behind the GN old wives’ tale that you need a good 2 and-a-half miler to win it. If that were ever true surely Thisthatandtother would have skooshed in last year from where he was 3 out?
February 6, 2008 at 21:22 #140778Royal County Star’s stated aim is the Irish National.
February 6, 2008 at 22:01 #140783thanks guys – will cross Royal County Star off me list – down to 32 now then…..
