I’ve got a shortlist of 5, but I’m not that convinced by them:
Butler’s Cabin and Slim Pickings are carrying a little bit more weight than I’d like.
Kelami – not sure he really gets the trip. Doesn’t win very often.
Philson Run – 12yo and wouldn’t be a particularly good winner of the race.
McKelvey – for some reason, I’m just not convinced.
I’ll probably have a few quid on 3 of these, but I’m not sure which ones.

kelamiApril 4, 2008 at 18:37 #155887I’ll be having three bets from five fancies:
Butler’s Cabin
D’Argent
McKelveyI also like Cloudy Lane (far too short) and Bewleys Berry (disappointing run latest), so they won’t be carrying my cash.
April 4, 2008 at 19:22 #155897So far I’m only on Comply or Die (win only). Much has been made of Cloudy Lane’s 20lbs that he has over the handicapper on this occasion, but I’m far more inclined to believe that CoD is genuinely 11lbs ahead at 139 than Cloudy Lane is 20lbs to the good off 141.
I’ll probably end up having two or three more. Yesterday for a bit of fun I applied some of the trends I occasionally watch out for and followed them religiously, even then I could only get down to seven! Clearly I’ve got a lot of studying to do.
April 4, 2008 at 19:44 #155904COMPLY OR DIE for me is the best e.w bet ever! if it gets round it will definately place, if its runs to its very best, it will definately win!, Best ew. bet is the lightly raced, but only through injuries, BACKBEAT this you can get at 66/1!!
April 4, 2008 at 20:02 #155906I’ve gone for Comply or Die (the negative of the blinkers needs to be set against the liklihood of him racing prominently) and Cornish Sett. I always like horses who might be described as ‘thinkers’ when they are presented with the Aintree fences. He obviously has plenty of stamina, is the right age, has a light weight and has had a light campaign. Lack of a run since the Welsh National is a slight concern but at 200/1 I can put up with one negative.
April 4, 2008 at 20:04 #155907Two best EW bets??!! I have to agree with you about c or d though
April 4, 2008 at 20:46 #155916I’ll be having three bets from five fancies:

McKelveyI also like Cloudy Lane (far too short) and Bewleys Berry (disappointing run latest), so they won’t be carrying my cash.
If you cannot back Bewleys Berry because of a poor last run, how can you then back Butlers Cabin who has been terrible in recent runs?
I am on Butlers Cabin, backed in the Autumn, but the way he has performed since I have written off my money.
I think Cloudy Lane will win but is no price.
I also backed Mr Pointment after his Bechers win another lost cause methinks.
For next years race I have already made a note of Irish Raptor after his run this afternoon.
April 4, 2008 at 20:56 #155923if you’re money’s got a place part I wouldn’t lose all hope on Mr Poitment yet Paul. The Beecher form has worked out nicely- A New Story has since placed in the Irish National & Irish Raptor was unlucky today in the Topham. Also, judging by how he jumped in his novice days retrospectively, you could argue he was born to skip over the Aintree obstacles

April 4, 2008 at 21:32 #155943Slim Pickings is the one, though I’m put off a bit by the weight.
Had a small bet on Baily Breeze as I think the going/distance will suit.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Naunton Brook and/or Cornish Sett placed but can’t really see either winning.
April 4, 2008 at 21:44 #155949There’s probably a million and one trends to say why Backbeat can’t do it but his run at Sandown where he was a 28/1 outsider going away up the hill on his seasonal debut looks as good as ‘trial’ as i’ve seen. I can just picture him now loving it, bowling along out in front in a Lord Gyllene ‘pillar to post’ type of way. Seems best right handed though, although he has won at Newbury over hurdles in a big field. I also get the feeling that Howard Johnson is hiding his ability a little bit. I can’t see any logic in why HJ run him over hurdles over a distance not stretching the stamina he had proven at Sandown.
I’m on AP @250’s with Bf and 100/1 with 5 places Bet D.
I’m also on Butlers Cabin. Marathons are obviously his best trips nowadays so i’m happy to ignore his last two races and McKelvey just because if he’s proven to jump and stay and stands out like a sore thumb at 20’s +.
April 4, 2008 at 21:53 #155955Good luck everyone with your picks.
Ive gone for Butlers Cabin plus Fundamentalist.
the wife has got Comply or Die and D’Argent.

April 4, 2008 at 21:56 #155956Insted of going for all the usuall suspect i will tip a few big price horses who have been forgotten and may run big races.
Tumbling Dice at around 50-100s has been running over 2m to 2m4f not showing a great deal in the same way that Papillon was campaigned when he won his National and he has a rider who i have never heard of so he has all the credentials
King Johns Castle at 16-20s has been lightly raced and won a hurdle last time which will have sharpened him up for this race.
No Full formerley trained by Paul Webber but now with Eoin Doyle was a useful sort and looks to have been trained for this race and may belly his odds of about 80-1
All in all 3 irish trained horses from good trainers which may pass you by but could run huge races
April 4, 2008 at 21:57 #155958Have a few backed, done Butler Cabin ages ago @ 20-1, and he would be my best result by a long way. Have also backed Philson Run 33-1 and Point Barrow 28-1
Also little e/ws on:
Ardaghey @150-1
Joacci @ 66-1
Black Apalachi @66-1
Fundamentalist @ 66-1
and Dun Doire @ 28-1
Best would be that I still dont hit a winner, my worst race, just cant pick it, but always feel the need to have a go.
April 4, 2008 at 22:06 #155963I keep tapping into oddschecker to see if there’s loads of money going onto any of the Irish horses…bit like a ‘betometer’.
