Looks like being a cracking race in prospect with the smart Sky Lantern heading the betting. I like the look of either Just The Judge stepping up in trip, and Secret Gesture dropping back. It’s looking as though Qatar racing will only run one of the two, ground depending. Does anyone know if there is any rain forecast between now and Saturday, as if it does rain, the 8/1 on JTJ appeals, but if not, Secret Gesture dropping down in trip appeals more at the same price. A real strong traveller, and I’m sure would have won the Oaks if the trip was shorter. Sky Lantern is a very worthy favourite and it seems connections can’t wait to step her up in trip. Should be a cracker, but if anyone can shed some light as to what the going on Saturday may be, then I might snap up the price on one or the other tomorrow. Cheers

Looks like a good field with question marks regarding several of the prominent contenders.

I have to side with Just The Judge, as I had backed her ante-post for the Oaks expecting she might benefit from stepping up in trip.

Sky Lantern seems the obvious one having beaten Hills’ contender twice but with Hannon it often seems that the horses seem less likely as they venture beyond the mile trip.

Timeform are putting up Integral, which is a bit surprising as she has only won a listed race so far. Unbeaten in two starts, she is open to improvement and showed a good turn of foot last time. However, the second horse that day finished stone last next time and three others to run since were down the field as well. In fact the combined distance they were defeated in the four races concerned was nearly fifty lengths and that worries me with her being so short in this race against group 1 winners and older horses. She will need to be a very special horse to win this as far as I am concerned.

Secret Gesture was my long term Oaks horse and I was gutted when she couldn’t land my 25/1 bet. It may be that the drop in trip will help her but the Oaks form has shown nine runs since and they have all lost with seven unplaced. It just doesn’t look good enough and although dropping in trip, she is facing faster horses stepping up which could offset any benefit.

Hot Snap served it up in the Nell Gynn but flopped badly in the Guineas she needs to bounce back in some style and tackle a new trip. Going into the Nell Gynn she was rated as having to improve massively to win but did it in style. Was it a fluke win though? We will know more after this race but my gut tells me to go against the dream comeback for her.

I’ll go with the 1000 Guineas 1-2 to dominate this and although Sky Lantern has her form franked by Elusive Kate’s win afterwards I have to side with Just The Judge as my each-way bet at 8/1 (Corals) as she may have more stamina than the Hannon star.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Lets assume there is no more rain.
JTJ could be a non runner from what Ive read and it might be a bit risky siding with Hot Snap. I dont see Sky lanterns pedigree littered with staying types.

I dont like backing horses back from a break after running abroad so much but I think Sajjhaa ew at 12s with Paddy Power is my idea of a bet. Has run really well against some very good colts and I dont think she will fear too many of these.

Secret Gesture is not running and goes for the German Oaks on Sunday instead. Just The Judge will not run if there is any jar in the ground according to her connections. They are hoping for some ease in the ground but are keen to let her take her chance and with her being in the same ownership as Secret Gesture I expect they will want to have a runner after entering them both.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I think they’re expecting a good show from Hot Snap.

I think she represents a cracking bet at 9/1. My cash is down. (Kiss of death. :D )

    Any danger of firm ground?

    Any danger of firm ground?

Do you mean for Hot Snap?

If so I don’t think the going in the 1000 Guineas was given the blame for her poor showing. Apparently she just hadn’t seemed her usual self prior to the race and just didn’t run to form.

Tomorrow’s race is a hot contest but at 9/1 I think she represents a great EW bet. I suppose the biggest concern is the longer trip at which she’s untried, but I know she is still extremely highly regarded up at Warren Place and they are looking forward to the race.

I wouldn’t want to put anyone off their own fancy, but I’ve had a bit of a punt myself.

    …here’s hoping. :)

Just read a report that says she may get pulled if the going is really firm, so you might have been right after all Sir Harry. :(

I’m not sure why the position has changed as the going in the Guineas wasn’t used as an excuse for her poor showing at the time, but perhaps Lady Cecil has a different view.

…here’s hoping it’s rained there overnight then. :)

Voila… I had anticipated no jtj or hot snap. Couldn’t put you off her. I’m hanging my hat on the hope the younger fillies, sky lantern aside may be not so special.

The best of luck to Sky Lantern but at 2/1 I can’t back her. Stable could not be in better form though and the punters are like moths to that sort of flame.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Could be a Cecil double on the cards today if Hot Snap comes good.. The lad that does ‘Spiritoftomitoul’ (New 4.40pm) won’t hear of it being beat.

Hughes reckons he was coming through to win but I felt Sky Lantern was not quite travelling at her best today. Just The Judge was beaten after a furlong to my eyes, never travelling with any fluency and I couldn’t back her again on that evidence.

Hot Snap put up a good show and may yet do something this season. As I had expected, Integral was out of her depth today and I nearly choked on my cornflakes when I saw her at 5/1 yesterday!

A messy sort of race and the position of the previously tailed off Thistle Bird behind a Ribblesdale non-stayer doesn’t give the feeling of a vintage renewal.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Sky Lantern was already beaten (I thought she was too much on her toes before the race . Obviously not ideal when trying a new longer trip out.) but it’s made a tailor made excuse for Hughes and the Hannon camp.

I thought Hot Snap could have been a lot closer. Tom had her too far off the pace for my money, although I expect the rolling camber made it difficult to get her in the right place.

I’m in profit with the place money but a bit disappointed that I didn’t collect. I have to admit I was more confident than I perhaps let on. So much so that I picked out my new fishing boat prior to the race and thought I only had to collect. :(

I’d have thought she would get a bit further too Steve no?

No mate, I did my profit and a bit more besides on Lady Cecil’s in the New 4.40, so it will have to be a pond net! :D

I couldn’t really be sure Hot Snap would stay further Hammy. I’d be tempted to try her at today’s trip again first.

Hard luck with the fishing boat, perhaps you need to lower your sights a bit to this magnificent value for money craft Ariane:-

Wasn’t Hot Snap caught behind a wall of horses, and continually being baulked every time he tried to make a move. When he saw daylight, he flew.

I was raging that the commentator was rabbiting on about the favourite all the wretched time, when Hot Snap’s predicament and eventual finish were much more interesting.

But I wonder if it’s an unspoken understanding among the ‘insiders’ to downplay the bad luck in running of potential goldmines, as also in HS’s case, their chance to begin with, in order to recoup their losses at an even better price later.
