Frederick Engels was only unlucky in terms of who was on board. Always two horses further back than he should have been this was an accident waiting to happen. Time will probably show he should have won but absolutely no consolation to anyone who supported him today.

I can’t remember a supposed top jockey produce such a succession of awful rides. Surely he can’t mess up on Deacon Blues as well?

I don’t know how you can blame 100% with Murtagh, Stilvi, unless you think he invited the Bolger horse to completely take him out.

They went hard up front and he judged it well. The gap was there and he looked set to go up the rail until his ground was taken. I’d be understandably gutted, as I’m pretty sure FE would have won the race, for what it’s worth.

    Murtagh’s does

    seem

to be making more mistakes this year than normal, though.

Yep, what would Johnny Murtagh know about riding at The Curragh.

Very careless from Manning whose horse was back peddling at the time. He checked over his right shoulder yet moved his horse to the left and nearly put Murtagh through the rails in the process.

He got three days for it, deservedly so, imo.

Very little judged on that effort.

What he tried to do was high risk at best. The problem occured when having initially jumped in the second rank Murtagh eased the horse back to the third rank. Why? After that things were always going to be difficult facing two walls of traffic instead of one.

Fortunately, he was able to force his way out from what was another poor position on Deacon Blues.

From watching I would have said that Ballydoyle messed up again. Murtagh rode two winners later on on the casrd.

Sometimes you just have to accept that it was unlucky. The horse in front jinked left as he was making his move , thats racing!

Poor riding from Manning caused the final problem, but

    Frederick Engels

didn’t have the run of the race at any time and looked a desperately unlucky loser. Why’ve you got it in for Murtagh at the moment,

    Stilvi

? This isn’t the first time you’ve attacked him. Isn’t it time to transfer your critical attentions to some other, less accomplished, jockey?

Johnny Murtagh’s mind may have been elsewhere – explaining any lapse of concentration.

Apparently his father passed away yesterday.

Paul, thank you for passing on that sad news. It speaks volumes for JM’s professionalism that he fulfilled his book of rides yesterday, and did his job so well in spite of his personal loss.

I sometimes think all people like Stivi care about are their wallets, given Paulostermeyer post.

Johnny Murtagh’s mind may have been elsewhere – explaining any lapse of concentration.

Apparently his father passed away yesterday.

But perhaps Murtagh should not have ridden since he was in a no win situation.

Well… more precisely, a two win situation.

We all react differently to family death, of course: for some of us carrying on "business as normal" as best we can helps us come to terms with it and seems somehow … well, what the departed person might have wanted. Who’s to say?

First of all i’d like to say well done to Johnny for having the bottle to go out and do his job in which is surely a very difficult time for him.

As for the ride i backed the horse and rued my luck but can’t see how Murtagh’s getting the blame from some people Murtagh did nothing wrong,he knows the track better than almost anyone and seen there was a gap on the rail,Kevin Manning’s the man to blame he cut across fredricks path and stopped the horse in his tracks, watch the replay and see the big gap on the rail for the last furlong or so that’s what Murtagh was going to attack and that’s where fredricks turn of foot would’ve came into play!

Put simply it was bad luck!

    Totally agree everyone reacts differently.

I lost my father in similar circumstances to Johnny Murtagh last year.

I wanted to spend as much time as possible with him in his final days and I was by his side almost 24/7 in the final week of his life.

My Mother, by contrast, last saw him a week before he died, not because she did not care or love him – but because she could not bear to watch his final decline and she carried on "as normal" during that week – she wanted her last memory of him to be a man with some remaining dignity and their last goodbye was something I will remember the rest of my life.

So yes we do all react differently and I can see why JM may well wanted to have carry on as normal, of course that could well have been what his Dad wanted as well.

FWIW, I’ve only just read that Kevin Manning was given a four day ban for that left-turn manoeuvre which took Frederick Engels out as Murtagh was coming with his run.

Cannot understand the attitude of some people.Murtagh is a bad jockey because Kevin Manning nearly put him on the ground and he is a bad person because he rode while his father was dying. No winning for Johnny. There is some hidden hostility someplace in these posts.I suppose he is also a bad jockey because he did not go to Germany while his father was dying! No winning for Johnny.Sad sad people.Personally I believe he is a brilliant Group One jockey and one of the most upright and moral of persons to walk away from the highest paying jobs in racing and keep his silence while those on the forum are barking like dogs.

Murtagh messed up, It was a terrible ride in a Group 1.

Obviously Family circumstances are very touchy subject but nevertheless that was a bad ride in a Group 1 for once in Murtagh’s career.

Obviously family affairs i reckon has not helped Johnny recently as his riding has been very poor this year.

Ruby surely you mean that Manning messed up. If a horse in front cuts you off as he is losing ground and the stewards fine the jockey for his actions how can you say that the victim messed up.Do you think that Heffernan messed up not winning that race? Is that why you took a swing at Johnny? As I said earlier there is a hidden agenda in play with those who beat on Johnny.
