Hill Sixteen trained, ironically, by one Sandy Thomson
April 1, 2025 at 21:14 #1725364I think he blamed protestors for that one , ive no idea if that was case but the ” he died doing what he enjoyed ” line would not wash if worst happens on any racecourse to Mr Incredible .
Iam not 100 pc sure horses enjoy it , probably most happy doing it but they are herd animals and run with the pack anyway . My thoughts are a riderless horse follows field because thats the herd . No one knows for sure anyway unless Mr Ed tells them .
The cavalry horses used to charge cannons , they did it but not sure they enjoyed it .April 1, 2025 at 21:18 #1725366“Helcat Google “Yorkhill” and “Rehearsal chase” , Thomson is to the master of repairing soured horses ”
Helcat said they rolled the dice and it didn’t come off. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. They did really well to get Yorkhill back to win the Rehearsal, though he never raced again after that. They got Bellshill from Closutton- a horse who was never the same after being hard driven on ground with “firm” in it to win the Irish Gold Cup. He had one start for Thomson , in the Betfair, and finished last walloped about 80 lengths before sustaining a fatal injury on the gallops.
Ganapathi is also in the yard- he came 2nd in a Moscow Flyer and won a couple of chases before leaving Mullins rated 142 over fences. He passed through a couple more hands then went to Thomson a year ago rated 122. He’s now rated 114, though had some respectable placed efforts lately. Sometimes the rehab works well, sometimes things go OK, sometimes it doesn’t work at all.
April 1, 2025 at 21:52 #1725367Good info Green .
Clearly has a relationship with Mullins , thats his angle then ,turning horses around , sadly it has not worked this time
.April 1, 2025 at 23:19 #1725370Does anyone have further information on the “National Fence Review Panel” who make the recommendations about horses being ineligible to run in the National? Published detail on the panel and their decisions seems scarce. I guess it might be in part as the BHA don’t want to attract negative publicity to those that they contact.
Where the BBC article suggests six horses were prevented from taking part by the panel last year, I’d be interested to know who they were and at which declaration stage this happened. The number seems quite high.
April 1, 2025 at 23:55 #1725373I don’t know so much about Sandy Thomson’s ability to “repair” horses. Prior to winning the Rehearsal Chase Yorkhill was a decent horse with Willie and had won 10 of his 25 starts and over 320k in prize-money. So he won a Rehearsal Chase and never raced again. I think bigger miracles have happened in the game of NH Racing.
Ganapathi was 4 from 13 with Willie and is now 0 from 18 with four different trainers. Running a horse off 114 in a Carlisle Handicap Chase is no big feat.
In fact, I think that most horses he gets at a later stage rather deteriorate than improve. Blaming protestors for Hill Sixteen’s death was something we already discussed, but he had a look at him shortly before the race and if it was in such bad shape he should have withdrawn him.Marlingford, thanks for mentioning the “National Fence Review Panel” and the six horses prevented from taking in last year’s race. It would be good to know the names and the reasons behind the panel’s decision.
April 2, 2025 at 17:09 #1725401Ruby Sandy most definitely ” repairs horses ” he takes them out of there usual training routines and gets them thinking/enjoying racing again , they go to the beach , some even go hunting , Yorkhill is his best example , he was soured at Mullins , his last run there he pulled himself up flashing his tail , Sandy then got him to win a graded race , it looks like he won’t be able to turn around Mr Incredible but I’m glad for the owners that they had ago , we need some dreamers in the sport , if you don’t then u end up with OLeary on the telly ….
April 2, 2025 at 22:27 #1725442When a small trainer takes over from a big trainer and does well, it tends to stick in the mind. Sandy Thomson is able to rekindle the enthusiasm of one or two… But even with Yorkhill it was only the once and a change of scene – any scene – can sometimes work wonders too. As it did with Mr Incredible before.
Showed great promise when with De Bromhead. Winning on chase debut before made 11/10 fav in the John Francome Grade 2 novice at Newbury (finishing 30+ lengths behind Ahoy Senor). Looking a difficult ride in the process, hanging badly left after the home turn. Then on his only two subsequent starts for the yard refusing to race and… Finally – although setting off – I’ve seldom seen a horse stop so fast. Going from a normal pace to stood still in a few strides after jumping the 5th. Pulling himself up.
You could say the change of scene from De Bromhead to Mullins rekindled Mr Incredible’s enthusiasm. At least well enough to see him placed in some top handicaps. Brought down – through no fault of his own – on his first start for the yard. Then a fast finishing second in the Classic Chase at Warwick before placed in the Fulke Walwyn at Cheltenham (although his finishing effort left a lot to be desired)… Followed by (between two unseats in the Grand National) runner-up spot again in the Midlands National… Under such a forceful whip ride – imo should have seen the rider having a holiday. Stewards missed it, but not surprising it was the last good performance of Mr Incredible’s career. Almost refused to race at aintree; doing so at Ayr. Never going well in a Grade 1 over hurdles in France before Sandy Thomson took over. Another RR and PU.
Sandy Thomson has not been successful at all with Mr Incredible. Looking the same as he did with De Bromhead and latterly with Mullins.
Sandy Thomson has his admirers. Not me. Mr Incredible hates racing, FFS retire him!
Value Is EverythingApril 2, 2025 at 22:43 #1725445Mr. Incredible has told his connections in the only way he knows how that he does not want to continue racing. He’s more than earned his place in someone’s pasture.
April 13, 2025 at 17:53 #1727198Horse struggled after the 8th or 9th fence in the Scottish National and Alice Stevens did the right thing to pull him up. How many excuses will Sandy Thomson find to keep a horse with no enthusiasm at all in training?
April 14, 2025 at 07:56 #1727238I would be astounded if they press on with this horse ,even if you take every consideration for the horse out of it , purely financially it makes no sense whatsoever . No ones winning out of this situation .
April 14, 2025 at 12:04 #1727250A point made on Twitter (by ex-trf’er David Johnson of Timeform) which I think is highly relevant was –
“Am I the only one that thinks it absurd you ban a horse from running in a Grand National one week but have no issue with him running in a less high profile one a week later.”
April 14, 2025 at 12:27 #1727252It is absurd but the Grand National is far more high profile and under much more scrutiny. The fatalities at Ayr have generated nothing like the amount of column inches and clicks as Broadway Boy and Celebre D’Allen did.
