Real Quiet vs. Victory Gallop in the 1998 Belmont. Real Quiet lost the Triple Crown by about half a nostril; some die-hards still claim he won the photo finish. There was an awful lot of bumping and shoving in the stretch, enough that it would result at least an inquiry in any other race. It was overlooked in part because giving Real Quiet the win meant that the long-awaited Triple Crown winner would be a "fraud".
Now imagine if Real Quiet had gotten that photo. Would any steward dare to disqualify what many American racing pundits believe is the only thing that can save the sport, the only thing that will put horse racing back in the minds of the American public?
Miss Woodford,
I don’t follow you, I’ve just watched the race and there was no interference at all. Real Quiet was miles clear in the stretch and Victory Gallop came through unimpeded.
Looked like Desormeaux went for home to soon but couldn’t see any interference.Maybe I’ve been listening to Real Quiet fans too much. Much like the Sunday Silence vs Easy Goer debate still rages 20-odd years after the fact, this one won’t go away because he
almost
got it.
