Seeing as France are still sticking to their own interference rules instead of aligning with UK and Ireland, made me think back to the disqualifications of the past and some ludicrous decisions by our own racing authorities……such as Vacarme getting thrown out in the Richmond Stakes under Lester in the 1980’s after bolting up by 5 lengths, a decision that led Daniel Wildenstein removing all his horses from the UK I believe? And also Sabrehill, a horse of Henry Cecil’s getting thrown out at Newbury for giving Bobzao a slight bump before trotting up by 4…. Can you think of any ludicrous decisions that led to horses being thrown out or indeed ones that made you wonder ‘how the hell the horse kept the race’??
October 8, 2010 at 23:35 #321478Pizzaro beating Rhinestone Cowboy in the Festival Bumper. I can only speculate that the O’Grady/Magnier connection might have had something to do with the result standing.
October 9, 2010 at 02:04 #321486Rose Ravine badly hampering Crimson Embers on the run in at the Cheltenham Festival in 1985, in what is now the World Hurdle. Both horses were in the same ownership, so the stewards let the original result stand!

French stewards not applying their own rules and throwing Dylan Thomas out of the Arc

Got home from work to watch recorded C4 coverage which ended straight after the race, cheered home a 360/30 winner (more than a weeks pay in those days), for my dad to pipe up "you don’t know what happens do you?"
To this day I still don’t know what interference took place.
October 9, 2010 at 11:10 #321517There was an Italian horse thrown out after winning the Gold Cup because he had ear plugs on his way to the start or something. Forget the finer point of the disqualification. They let him race supposing he was a nonentity. Then when he won they dissed him.

You’re memory’s getting a little hazy, Indian Skimmer- Vacarme won by a hard-held three parts of a length. Ridiculous decision to throw him out, but Royal Gait’s was even worse.

For sneaky, cheating theft of the race …Gosden/Darley, QEII, 2000 – when Observatory stole Giant’s Causeway’s win.
Couldn’t beat him fair & square.
Grrr
April 27, 2011 at 14:16 #352392Statoyork at Brighton in 1996, won hard held by 3 or 4 lengths but brushed another runner when coming through a gap.
Although I’ve lost a few times from backing a disqualified horse I’ve never profited from one being disqualified.
Interesting that no one puts up a non disqualification, shows the rules are better these days.April 27, 2011 at 14:52 #352396Ad Valoram should deff been thrown out of the queen anne royal A 2006
April 27, 2011 at 16:32 #352410The aptly named Boring Goring took a 90 degree left turn after jumping the last hurdle at Exeter back in Nov 2001, collided with it’s only challenger Keltic Heritage and almost knocked that horse over, bringing it to a complete standstill.
When he got to the far rail, Boring Goring was straightened out and rallied to win by just over a length. To the utter amazement of all concerned the Exeter stewards (Ray Charles, David Blunkett and Stevie Wonder) agreed that there had been interference, but that it hadn’t affectd the result.

Don’t remember that (which Gold Cup?) but I do remember Westerner should have been disqualified from the Ascot Gold Cup because the jockey took his earplugs out during the race – in fact that was the third time that season Wildenstein had ordered his jockey to do that, despite it being against the rules. I’m guessing the pissant fines inflicted were nothing against potential stud value. Supposedly he also insulted the Godolphin winner in the paddock afterwards.
April 27, 2011 at 21:37 #352448Real Quiet vs. Victory Gallop in the 1998 Belmont. Real Quiet lost the Triple Crown by about half a nostril; some die-hards still claim he won the photo finish. There was an awful lot of bumping and shoving in the stretch, enough that it would result at least an inquiry in any other race. It was overlooked in part because giving Real Quiet the win meant that the long-awaited Triple Crown winner would be a "fraud".
Now imagine if Real Quiet had gotten that photo. Would any steward dare to disqualify what many American racing pundits believe is the only thing that can save the sport, the only thing that will put horse racing back in the minds of the American public?

Miss Woodford,
I don’t follow you, I’ve just watched the race and there was no interference at all. Real Quiet was miles clear in the stretch and Victory Gallop came through unimpeded.
Looked like Desormeaux went for home to soon but couldn’t see any interference.April 28, 2011 at 11:00 #352514My Way De Solzen – Stayers Hurdle 2006
Had Golden Cross backed at crazy odds antepost but I’m not bitter……
April 28, 2011 at 18:26 #352571Perhaps the worst I ever saw was the defeat of Farmer Brown by Westlake at Leopardstown on July 4th 2007. The replay will show clearly the insane judgement to allow Westlake to keep the race after interfering with Farmer Brown every way imaginable.Farmer Brown went on to win the Galway Hurdle and Captain Cee Bee was third in that incredible farce of a decision.See it all on ATR.
