"The old boy’s enjoying himself" – Derek Thompson, horse psychologist, at Fakenham today (11yo horse in question got beaten over 40 lengths into fifth, wonder how far he would have got beat had he been hating every minute of it).
November 20, 2007 at 21:01 #125962Three words, "You’ll Miss Nothing."
Dunno why it annoys me so much but everytime someone on Channel 4 ( usually A. Down) says it I want to throw something at the TV.
I think it’s because it sounds like we should be gratefull that they’re gonna actually show the race!!
November 20, 2007 at 22:37 #125985‘Anything he does over hurdles is a bonus’ – trainer pitching a tale implying a big chasing type who`ll need time, fences … and proving useless at that too.
November 20, 2007 at 22:38 #125986"In the van" – must be on the way to the racecourse then!
"Covered up" – with what?November 20, 2007 at 23:31 #125997‘Anything he does over hurdles is a bonus’ – trainer pitching a tale implying a big chasing type who`ll need time, fences … and proving useless at that too.
Normally quoted by Nicholls/Henderson etc, though normally turn out quite good, seem to remember Denman being quoted like this.
November 21, 2007 at 00:10 #126003Actually, I don’t mind the cliches at all, and love the more colourful metaphors. I love the way the Yanks enliven as much as they can what would otherwise be dry, everyday speech with the most hilarious metaphors and sayings.
All I ask.. I beg… is for commentators to describe the current position of the leading horses as they approach the finish, when it is quite possible to do so. You can update it in a few moments, truly you can.
Nope, I’m not claiming that I would be ANY good at commentating. I can only marvel at the commentators’ immediate recognition of the silks.
November 21, 2007 at 12:32 #126067Not a racing cliche, from the ever orange Matthew Chapman,
"Thats just my opinion, as you know my opinion means absoluetly nothing"
Then why Matt do you inflict us with at least a million and one opinions during the day.I suppose we could start a separate thread on Chapman cliches.

Yes, that was his view on Barry Fenton yesterday.
But remember, it’s only his opinion.
November 21, 2007 at 14:05 #126087Some GG irritations (I normally like him BTW).
As mentioned before
"he’s gone 5-6-7-8-9 lengths clear". Is this to prove that he successfully completed his 4 years old Maths Test? Also, "sitting chilly".
OK when Tom Durkin says it but sounds naff in an English accent.and at one time he decided to replace "they’re off" with "race away".
I also hate when Jim (Timeform) McGrath demeans horses with "he beat trees" and "he beat rubbish".

Ah. You’ll not have liked me commiting "he beat zombies / camels" (but never "zombie camels", curiously) to print many times either, then…

Adoptive father of two. The patron saint of lower-grade fare. A gently critical friend of point-to-pointing. Kindness is a political act.

If there’s some humour in it then no problem, but I don’t detect that in Jim’s comments.
