Yesterday the De Royer-Dupre trained Montmartre won the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp in style. The horse won by 4l and it was that impressive against some decent horses, that it is now 4/1 favourite for the Arc. It eased at the line, where as the likes of Curtain Call and Doctor Fremantle were a mile behind.
4/1 for the Arc – Good price or Bad?
Did anybody else see the race? C Soumillion gave it a great ride and imo think the horse is even better than we think.July 15, 2008 at 10:41 #173295Grand Prix de Paris and Arc threads in the other forum.
July 15, 2008 at 11:48 #173307Form would rate pretty similar to New Approachs derby win on a line through Doctor Fremantle. Would imagine New Approach would have improvement in him if he learns to settle, thats if he makes it there at all.
July 15, 2008 at 17:21 #173376I must be the only one not overly impressed!!, imo the horse was simply left clear whilst the others where messing around having barging matches, the ride given to DOCTOR FREEMANTLE was bordering on pathetic, makes me wonder whether UK based jockeys can really ride Longchamp(not the easiest of tracks), Dettori wasn`t much better on CURTAIN CALL!! earlier in the evening Chris Catlin was attrocious on the Eoghan O`Neill trained REVE DE SOLEIL, he must have thought he was in a ping pong championship!!
With regards to the “ARC “ MONMARTRE is trading around 5,5 (Betfair), and 5-1 with Corals, DOCTOR FREEMANTLE is 40`s and 65-1, if the DOC learns from this and he makes it to the ARC those prices will look very big, you can totally ignore last nights effort!!
July 15, 2008 at 20:21 #173389I was impressed and for me he looks to be the best 3yo since Dalakhani.
Should win the Arc as i would not be surprized if New Approach ducked and went straight to nookie duties.

Bold claim that considering where the 2nd and 3rd came from… Ridden closer they would have given him a race… Has everyone forgotten that New Approach came second in two guineas then won the derby despite not settling at all and coming through no end of traffic?
Now that I don’t think Zarkava will line up i’ll be backing the bolger colt.. I’d be more concerned about vision d’etat, DOM and Youmzain at this stage.
July 16, 2008 at 11:35 #173427Montmatre was very impressive, but whether he can replicate or come close to replicating that performance against other good horses, such as New Approach or Zarkava (should she run) is another matter altogether.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
July 18, 2008 at 17:00 #173673I agree he was impressive but I wasn’t impressed by the way the other placed horses were ridden. Turning for home there were horses running up the backside of others and pace looked very false to me. Of those who finished in the places he was the handiest and hisn jockey took full advantage of that.
A quick look at his previous form shows he probaly isn’t as good as this result makes him look.
Zarkava under the same ownership to me is in a different legue and I am hoping nothing will prevent he from running. Had enough of that crap with JP and Binocular.
Still can’t see past the filly.
July 18, 2008 at 17:11 #173677You da man, Fists!!!!
A thread about the Arc and you get in a mention of Binocular.
TOTAL RESPECT.

July 18, 2008 at 18:21 #173685I’m surprised JP never entered him in the Arc to try and get my lolly off me
July 18, 2008 at 19:11 #173691Of the pair I would think that Montmartre is more the Arc horse than Zarkava, and she has Prix de L’Opera written all over. However Montmartre would remind me much more of scorpion than Hurricane Run.
SCORPION
Montjeu(IRE) (11.6f) – Ardmelody (Law Society (USA)(11.5f))MONTMATRE
Montjeu(IRE) (11.6f) – Artistique(IRE) (Linamix (FR )(10.8f))
Both horses were unraced at 2yo, but ran encouragingly early on at 3yo.
Both horses were thumped for toe in the Prix Du Jockey Club, Scorpion was 16th, Montmartre was 15th.
Both horses improved for the step up to 1m4f before having a stab at the GPDP.
Both horses won the Grand Prix Du Paris in almost identical times, Scorpion 5.1 secs fast, Montmartre 5.3 secs fast, both on good ground.Montjeus love a fast pace, and they are almost always at the top of their game in fast paced races, which should make Montmartre a worthy favorite for the Arc, especially if a big field turns up, and the pace is hectic (as is oftejn the case). My only worry is that if the pace is slow (as in 2006) he will left stone dead by many of the others, just as scorpion was on so many occasions.
Another point is that the Prix Niel is not usually the stamina test that the Arc and the GPDP are and I would expect that he could be turned over in the Prix Niel especially with the Prix Jockey Club winner Vision D’Etat targetting the same race. Vision D’Etats 16-1 will disappear if he does win the Prix Niel, which I would think he will, and he looks like a good bet as he can be laid off much shorter on the day.
Another point is that we know an unsettled New Approach can run to the same level of form as Montmartre, we just dont how much better will he be if he settles. We could only guess, just as we can only guess whether jim bolger will send him there (8-1 would look a reasonable price for a safety).
Zarkava I would give next to no chance of even placing in the arc, unless either the pace is ridiculously slow or the ground comes up good to firm (both situations are unlikely IMO), her price of 6-1 is ridiculous, I’d want at least 20s.
My two for the arc are Vision D’Etat @ 16-1 and New Approach @ 8-1. Montmartre however is IMO the biggest danger to those bets.
July 18, 2008 at 21:35 #173709I’d say let him prove the form wasn’t a fluke before everyone gets carried away. Visually impressive, but to call him the best 3yo since x is a jump.
Should be an interesting Arc…
