Whats everyones opinions on Monmouth Park making a race for Big Brown to run in with ample prep time before the breeders cup?
The prize money would be $300,000 less if Big Brown didnt turn up!
Surely a tailor made win for Big Brown? I cant for the life of me understand why he’s 11/10 to win tonight if it’s all set up for him
September 13, 2008 at 21:00 #180814Really interesting that they are going to prep him for the B Cup Classic on Pro-Ride by running him at Monmouth on turf over 9 furlongs.
Normally an East Coast horse would run at the end of the month in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (Gr.1) over 10 furlongs on dirt but obviously they don’t consider this suitable either in terms of timing, distance or surface – probably the latter being the main reason.
I see that Belmont and Philadelphia also tried to attract him to their turf races but Monmouth’s increased purse – allied to his success in the Haskell there – seems to have won the day.
Should be really interesting to see how he goes…

September 13, 2008 at 22:54 #180823Really not sure what to read into that.
Did the jockey let BB go off far too quick? IMO yes but the horse seemed to save the day on its own in the end.
Over another furlong would BB have been hacked down? Quite possibly but we’ll never know as they were only edging closer but not at any great pace.
Will BB go 10 furlongs on grass? He’ll go to the Breeders Cup Classic now and with a spirit like he showed in the final furlong there you’d think he’d be in with a reasonable chance if he doesnt go and lead all the way. In some ways, that race reminded me of DoM in the King George the way I thought he was going to be caught and then managed to still win it.
I’d be tempted to take the 8/1 on Ladbrokes at the moment for Big Brown to win the BCC but I’ll have to have a big think about whether he can do 10f first.
NA seems to be tailor made for the BCC at the moment (in my head), even down to the look of being ponied down like he’s running in America!
September 14, 2008 at 08:54 #180854Curlin should win his next start in the Jockey Club Cup after that I hope his owner Jess Jackson decides to run the horse in the Breeders Cup Classic because for me he’s a class above Big Brown. The synthetic surface at Santa Anita really shouldn’t be a problem and I hope Curlin doesn’t miss the race for that reason. At this stage looking at the Classic I consider Duke Of Marmalade to be a tougher opponent to Curlin than BB. Of course, we don’t know yet whether Ballydoyle will run DOM in the race as they also have mentioned the possibility of running Henrythenavigator. Personally I hope DOM ends up taking his chance.
September 14, 2008 at 13:04 #180888I cannot see CURLIN lining up in the Classic. Slim to no chance IMO.
I would also expect DUKE OF MARMALADE to run in the Turf with HTN in the Classic.
Haven’t been impressed with BIG BROWN in his last two starts. I think he will be found wanting in the Classic.
September 14, 2008 at 16:04 #180911Exeter did it for Best Mate so dont see why Monmouth cannot do it for Big Brown.
September 14, 2008 at 19:08 #180956Lingfield did it for Coolmore, O´Brien and Castle Gandolfo too.

How will he cope with the tight bends and the distraction of the hare?
September 15, 2008 at 22:24 #181184I think the jockey should have maybe let him have a breather at some point, i didn’t expect him to make all the running like he did.
The jockey didn’t really give Big Brown anything with the whip, it was mostly hands and heels stuff.
Did very well in the end.
