I didn’t see the race at Hexham, but I just can’t believe that this mare managed to win a race, even a handicap as dire as this one. She looked very unco-operative on her previous outing at the course, though the eventual excuse on that occasion was a slipping saddle.
This was one animal I would not have backed with buttons to win a walk-over. Oh how horses make us look foolish sometimes!

November 8, 2008 at 00:39 #188656oh yes, rob, thats absolutely right!!but maurice barnes has the odd good horse, but ok,this one was unbackable today!he has this famous little frontrunner, but i am desperately trying to remember the name,i have it on my tongue..do you know the name?.. you are from scotland,do you have some opinions on the kelso card tomorrow?..have you ever been there?see you,

November 8, 2008 at 00:51 #188662The fact the winner passed the post in near silence tells how well backed it was (although I saw an old boy coming away from the Tote with a couple of hundred quid in his hand – so he was happy). Having said that it was a good front running performance, a tactic that seemed to work well today – the going was officially heavy – I would call it gluey.
To put teh win into context the distances were 9 and 15 lengths and the third barely crawled over the line.
I would suggest none of today’s races are ones for the form book.
The runners who caught the eye this afternoon were According To Pete who won his race well and Tastes Like More in the first who was a very eye catching running on third..

I was hoping to get to Kelso tomorrow, but other commitments keep me away. I like the course and the view from the top of the old stand takes some beating. A pretty average meeting on this occasion, and though I’ve kept a close eye on chasers in the north this season there’s nothing that really catches my eye for tomorrow.
On the Hexham card, According To Pete did the job nicely enough. Jass ran a fair race in behind and should pick up a run of the mill chase before long. Sue Smith has had success with one or two after a long lay-off recently and did the trick again with Sunny Brook, though that was a very moderate contest. A couple from the two mile handicap chase are at least going the right way, Duke Of Malfi did his job well enough, and I’d expect Frith to pick up a small handicap before long.
I’ll review the Hexham chases for North’s Notes later and I’ll do a Kelso report over the weekend.

It’s definitely Caulker I’d say; little chestnut with a white face, front runner, game as a pebble; used to be ridden by Scott Taylor. Red and green check with yellow sleeves etc. Bringing it all back yet?
