Think of the most expletive-laden volley of verbal abuse and multiply it by 10. That is my reaction to the brutal punishment just given to poor old Glens Wobbly by 7lb claimer Kayy Lyons in the finale at Newbury.

I counted ten very hefty strikes from the whip in the final 300yds or so, and sincerely hope she is given a very long ban.

Glens Wobbly was bought by his owner who noticed his underbidder was the local butcher. He felt sorry for the animal, and basically saved him from the knackers yard.

Glens Wobbly is a very enthusiastic front runner, and anyone who has followed his fortunes will know he gives his all and never shirks the issue. He deserves much much more than the brutal attack this so called woman has meted out on him.

With some luck the connections will never let her anywhere near the gallant Glens Wobbly every again.

One rule for the amateurs and one for the pros !!!! But girls cant hit like blokes and sticks are so soft these days they dont leave any marks, not like the old days when jocks tried to hide the marks with horse sweat. It`s like being hit with a rolled up newspaper now.

These modern whips are like long black balloons. It’s hard to imagine how they could hurt anything in any circumstances. The whip rules are only there to appease the public

Moreover, I thought she gave the horse a fantastic ride. Unlike most of the professionals earlier in the day, who failed to realise that the far rail was the place to be all afternoon, she stuck like glue to the inside and nearly pulled off an all-the-way win at a pace that was on the lively side for the rain-softened ground

Well done Katy. The winning jockey often gets all the praise but in this case I reckon she got the very best out of her partner and deserves full credit for that

I can’t quite figure out whether you are being sarcastic or not. Whilst whip use is always an emotive / divisive subject, this was a terrible piece of riding that cannot be simply excused by the riders inexperience.
Whilst agreeing that the whip is not the same as it used to be, anyone thinking that it is like a rolled up newspaper, should perhaps be allowed to prove their point by having it used on them !?!.

Race 8 – 5:20pm THE RAYNER BOSCH CAR SERVICE HANDICAP STAKES (FOR LADY AMATEUR RIDERS) (CLASS 5)
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of Ms V L Pendleton, the rider of SATANIC BEAT (IRE), inside the final furlong. They interviewed Ms Pendelton. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by the gelding taking a false step causing the rider to lose her balance and become unseated. Being satisfied that no other horse or rider was involved the Stewards took no further action.

I don’t know about women using the whip properly, but A Atzeni got 6 days’ holiday after ‘using the whip in the wrong place’ on Argus (2 days) and Marcel (4).

Given the choice of being hit hard with the whip or a rolled up newspaper, I’d choose the whip. It’s softer, lighter and has a fat covering of foam. I suspect horses react to it these days more from instinct than to avoid pain.

I have never felt a modern whip so am not in a position to know the extent of the pain it causes. However I am also not a horse so it would be remiss of me to suggest with 100% certainty that it has no detrimental effect to the animal whether it be physical or, as is often overlooked in the whip debate, mental.
