December 18, 2020 at 15:10 #1514573Huge gamble going on. From 25s down to 9/4 within a few days.
Still impossible to compare to a seven time World champion who has re-written the record books, but someone clearly knows something.
December 18, 2020 at 22:07 #1514603Stuck a speculative fiver on her a couple of months back at 33/1 so here’s hoping!
My thought process was that there wasn’t any real standout candidates other than arguably Hamilton…
He’s won it before though and although he’s equalled the record of MS it’s based on the achievements of the last 12 months and he’s done what he’s done six times before and he’s driving the best car which is a big contributing factor.
For me what Hollie has achieved in the last 12 months tops that. There may be an element of the equality side of it but there should be…she’s doing fantastically well on a level playing field against men and unlike Hamilton with his car and team, she’s not riding the best horse for the best trainer every race!
Looks like she’s already got a tremendous amount of support building from the racing and equestrian community and to pick up on a point made earlier about those outside of racing not knowing her…
Could that not work in her favour?
Hamilton is unpopular in a lot of circles…O’Sullivan another who’s a bit controversial…the others just cannot win it…
So…if the presentation of her to the people who don’t know her is good…this little pocket rocket lass taking on the boys and more than holding her own in a year of breaking record after record I think she could pick up a hell of a lot of new fans and votes on the night to add to the huge following she’s already got!
December 18, 2020 at 23:10 #1514607I’m not on, Zamorston. But, I fully agree with you. Hamilton is like a Coolmore jockey always riding the 1st string in G1s only. The dirty work she did, like winning in the mud at places like Yarmouth or Nottingham, getting home late only to sleep a few hours, day after day, not picking up any stupid bans, not telling any **** about failed drug tests and so on.
That should give her a gret chance. All the best to your bet.
December 19, 2020 at 10:56 #1514651I’d be surprised if Hamilton doesn’t win it.
December 20, 2020 at 21:21 #1514831Don’t forget to vote!
December 20, 2020 at 22:25 #1514835She did well – 3rd – congratulations to Hollie!!!
December 20, 2020 at 22:30 #1514836Fair play Hollie – cant knock that.
Personally I didnt think her VT did her enough justice but good to see her there on the main stage. As i said a few months back, I just wish my 66s could have been each way. Never mind, im used to hitting thr crossbar with the majority of my bets haha
December 20, 2020 at 23:40 #1514839Well done coming in 3rd Hollie and now more people know who you are and what you have achieved next year you’ll win it..

She had no chance of winning- that’s not after timing as I posted same on Racing Post Facebook page. With all the BLM lark, LH was nailed on! Was hoping she may have been runner up, but third place for a relatively unknown from the Racing World is a good result
December 26, 2020 at 22:45 #1515311tbh Am glad Hollie did not win this.
She’s imo the best woman jockey we’ve ever had.
One of the best jockeys around of any sex…But if Hollie were to have won Sports Personality Of The Year, what would that have said about those who won more races and/or better races than she did during the year?
It would surely be saying – Men are better jockeys and that Hollie has done as well as any female can. Not only that, but so outstanding was her performance that it’s better than any other achievement by a British sportsman or sportswoman all year. Excellent though her performance undoughtedly was, this is imo not true.
We have/are slowly getting rid of the prejudice against women jockeys to such an extent there seems little around nowadays. Yes, female jockeys need to be even more stronger than the average woman… than male jockeys are of the average man. Most jockeys will be men just because it is easier for them to achieve that standard. But it is not a case of the strongest jockey wins; once a certain fitness / strength is achieved then yet more strength imo makes no difference. Therefore men and women are equals on horseback. There’s no reason women can’t be top jockeys and/or Champion jockey. It is after all the horse’s hooves on the ground not the jockey’s boots.
Finishing fourth in the Jockey’s Championship with a 14% strike rate is bloody good but not that good. Hollie wiining the 2020 BBC Sports Personality would’ve imo given the wrong signals.
Look forward to a time when women jockeys are winning titles / big races without much attention being drawn to it. Possibly a woman winning the jockey’s championship and so outstanding… going on to be Sports Personality Of The Year. Next year Hollie?
Value Is EverythingDecember 27, 2020 at 12:37 #1515366Great post Ginge – I had planned to write something similar but you’ve beaten me to it.
We should be at a stage where it doesn’t matter if a jockey has XY or XX chromosomes.
December 27, 2020 at 12:47 #1515369You’re both right. In 2020 we shouldn’t be talking about female and male jockeys. However until we see more women riding in the big races and finishing in the top end of the jockeys championships it is still an issue. Where are the female jocks in Ireland?
And one thing we should be doing is shouting from the rooftops about the opportunities for women in this sport and that racing is one of the few sports where women and men compete against each other every day.
