One man’s meat is another man’s poison

    – an idiom tailor-made for personal taste in music; hence debate as to who is ‘better’ Porter, Presley, Lennon or Jackson is all but pointless – whatever turns you on, each to their own.

The broad horizons of wide-eyed youth tend to narrow into a curmudgeonly tunnel vision as one ages, music being the exception: the vistas open up as one grows to appreciate it in all its gorgeous variety.

The death of Jackson means little to me, but the death of Lennon did, and it hurt. Therefore I will not sneer at the multitudes currently weeping for the loss of someone they cared deeply about and who brought them joy.

The pop world lost him as an entertainer many years ago and not when he died as he’s been capable of nothing for a long time.

As a person, he may not have been convicted of anything but he wasn’t right either.

That’s pretty much my take on it, too. I would probably qualify as a Jackson fan, I own every album from Off The Wall onwards and regard that record as one of my favourites in any genre. However, after an initial pang of reality, his death didn’t really affect me, as had he died on Thursday or in 40 years’ time, his legacy would have been just the same.

Even so we’re not fans of Whacko and Bing (not sure if you are, Paul), we’re still doing our best to defend them in the court of The Racing Forum :P

I don’t think I can really call myself a "fan" of anyone Zippy – I genuinely cannot think of any individual artist or group who I would actually pay money, or go out of my way, to see.

I also freely admit I do not have a single ounce of musical talent in my body and I could not hold a tune – even if my life, or that of a loved one, depended on it.

I also have two left feet when it comes to dancing – and it is not as if I have not tried. One of my Sisters teaches dance for a living and the other choreographs musicals – even they have given up on me!!!

To that end I have the utmost respect and admiration to anyone who can write, interpret and perform music – which is probably why I defend them.

    Paul,

Quite rare for someone not to have a music artist/band that touches them deeply.

Do you have another art form that moves you?

Plenty of music touches me emotionally i.e. can make me smile or feel sad or bring back memories – especially some classical works – but nothing musically affects me deeply as you put it. (Unless you count hitting the OFF button as soon as Kate Bush comes on as being deeply effected  )

I’m at an age where a lot of performers I would like to have seen perform are already dead and were probably dead before I discovered their music

Other art forms – again generally I appreciate a good painting but more often in admiration of the skill of execution than in the content.

I have little time for the cinema – if I watch more than two films a year, either in the cinema or on TV then it is the exception. I think the last film I saw was the last Indiana Jones film and only because my nephews were staying and wanted to go and see it.

A well composed photograph is more likely to move me more than anything.

I do read a lot, I get through a book every ten days on average – but only rarely fiction.

I hope I don’t sound like a philistine – I like and enjoy lots of art forms but not just at a deep emotional level.

I admit I am more a scientist than a humanities person. You only have to look as physical structures in nature, indeed in the body, to be really inspired.
My favourite, most well thumbed, book is a book of photographs of the internal workings of the human body – many at electron microscopic level – it is awesome.

As another example just look at fractals, especially in nature, although they are common in Celtic art as well, they are truly inspiring and, in truth, much more likely to inspire me than man made music.

A small Michael Jackson related anecdote. :)

I remember winning a pub quiz ( well, me and a mate did   ) and being handed Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall album, which was the winning prize.

This was around 1979, and Michael Jackson was not really an artist who interested me in the least – no, make that, at all ! – so on the way back to our table I offered it to a group of people, who I thought might like it instead. They looked at me as if I was crazy. Only when I explained that I would never listen to it or knew of anyone who would, did one woman, within the group, eventually stretch out her arm to relieve me of this new ( but unwanted ) vinyl offering.

    Paul,

I can see how there is art in science, although I struggle to get my head around the not-so-complex stuff, let alone the heavy subjects.

The human form is inspiring, I often think the body of a gymnast is the the most aesthetic look of all "sporting" physiques.

Is there not a point where science is limited and art takes over…a prime example being: "is there a God?"

There is philosophy in science to explain the unknown/unproven?

I looked up fractals and even that made my head spin

    Himself,

You haven’t won a pub quiz since 1979 – DISGRACEFUL!! Call yourself a man?!

Au contraire, Monsieur Zip ( ) , I have won countless pub quizzes since 1979, though my participation in these events has waned in recent years ( purposely, I might add ) since the introduction of the mobile phone -a useful cheating aid for the hard of thinking.

They should be banned on such evenings.

Even ignoreing the science and maths they are still beautiful

(although it has to be said whoever set up that site got slightly carried away as not all the pictures are fractals)

Himself – for just approximately 20 guineas you can purchase a useful little mobile phone jamming device from a chinese electronics wholesaler called chinavasion which when switched on would prevent anyone in a pub from using their mobile phones, works jolly well on the trains too, so I’m told, not that I’d know, seeing as technically it’s illegal.

Will I find them in the "yellow" pages ? :P No, no – strike that ! :oo
    ps:

Would be a useful tool though, but then I’d only be cheating the cheats – and as we moralists are very fond of saying, two wrongs don’t make a right.

Not sure what this anecdote proves and straying dangerously into stereotyping but IMO an MJ album not being wanted by ‘quiz team types’ is far from an indictment of the man’s achievements, appeal, merit etc. In fact if I was a performing artist I would be more worried if I did have appeal to those types.

What sort of pub quiz is that?

A pub quiz is only worth entering if the prize is hard cash.

My mate and I used to make a real killing doing pub quizzes almost every night – he would do the music and general sport and I would do all the science and trivia questions and we would guess the rest. It was a good earner for a few months – until we were either banned or given a minus starting score from almost all the local pub quizzes.

That was one off – pub quizzes were in there infancy in my part of the country at that time, and, in fairness, this particular pub’s prizes evolved into giving out cash and drink to the winners, not LPs.

I went onto to participate for hard cash (good cash at that) – four to a team (well organised, individual mics, the whole shebang) and travelled far and wide to participate. We were good – very good, though I say so myself. 8)

Mr. Bob Wharton, you were stereotyping btw. Though not an MJ fan, I like all strands and genres of music – having very eclectic tastes. I do, however, appreciate the man’s talents and the appeal he may have for certain people, I am not though ( in no way) what some would term an "anorak" or "pullover" type – quizster or no quizster. Never judge a book by its cover.

Wonder how much that album might be worth now, if it was kept in mint condition?

I see the promoters of the O2 concerts, AEG, are offering punters the choice of a refund or they can forgo the refund and still receive their ticket, which is now described as a “souvenir” ticket.

    What a money making scam?

I suppose one should admire the bare faced cheek of the marketing person who dreamed this one up – but what a con in an attempt to reduce their losses.
