June 8, 2016 at 22:11 #1250435That’s an interesting story, don’t remember it at all myself. Thanks for taking the time to post it.
June 8, 2016 at 23:48 #1250446Fascinating, Alan. I had no memory of this.
If it’s the same Angel Monserrate as was mentioned in a New York Times race report from Aqueduct in July 1967 (ten-day riding ban), he was certainly more than 25!
June 9, 2016 at 03:08 #1250467Memory Lane indeed. I don’t recall Angel Jacobs but it was interesting looking back at the Newbury race he won on Bold Faith and seeing Charlie Hills and Andrew Balding riding for their fathers in the same race.
After Angel Jacobs was found out and banned, Charlie Hills went on to win the amateur riders Championship.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I believe this Angel was born in 1969.
My memory of the events is mostly down to my having been at Warwick the day he won on Broughtons Lure working as host in a sponsors box. I made Broughtons Lure my nap in the last race and actually said to the audience that his rider was ‘the best in the race, more like a professional than an amateur’. At the time I had no idea how accurate that assessment was, but having seen his winning rides at Newbury and Carlisle on TV, I was aware that his 7lb claim was gold dust.
June 9, 2016 at 09:22 #1250478I had no recollection of this story either.
Here is his court case story:
June 9, 2016 at 09:34 #1250479Surprised nobody else remembers this. I’m certain it were reported on Teletext Racing and quite sure it made the front page of the Racing Post.
Fascinating read AP
June 9, 2016 at 10:01 #1250481That ocala link removes any sense of romance and adventure (for me, at least) attached to this character.
