She rode My Dream World to win the Queen Mother Cup at York on Saturday but may lose the race for possibly using her whip 10 times.
It is the same old story once an arbitrary number is put in place. If she has struck the horse a tenth time, she has to lose the race under the rules – unless she can argue one of the strikes missed, as in the Cesarewitch!
If the result is amended, connections of the second on the day will benefit but anyone who backed the horse will not be paid. Is it really so difficult for the stewards on the day to count? They are allowed to decide on matters of interference, which is more to do with interpretation of the rules than fact.
But in the aftermath of the race, how many people in that huge crowd at York thought to themselves “That lady amateur jockey used her whip too often. I am very offended and never going to attend again!”
Who or what is being served by this rule? A group of people who do not want to be appeased? We are talking about amateur jockeys in this case as well.
June 17, 2025 at 09:00 #1733241I wonder if she has drank all of the champers

The more I know the less I understand.
June 17, 2025 at 12:51 #1733296Maybe hands and heels races could be helpful to amateur riders as well. What’s the point of hitting a horse ten times, especially in an amateurs’ race? And it’s not about being offended or talking about horses’ welfare, but what is the point of hitting it that offen?
June 17, 2025 at 13:30 #1733312I agree hands and heels might be a good option for that race.
June 18, 2025 at 09:31 #1733570Disqualification now confirmed.
The owners get the real punishment, total loss of prize money and a 5lb rise in the handicap mark. By contrast, the 14 day ban for an amateur rider is no more than a slap on the wrist with a Pro-Cush!
June 18, 2025 at 09:44 #1733571Silly rules.
I don’t recall anyone mentioning at the time on any TV channel or forum that there had been an excessive use of the whip and/or it was offensive on the eye.
Didn’t The Ces prove that it is difficult for stewards to count on the day?
June 18, 2025 at 10:39 #1733577Note how ITV Racing described it as a “top ride” with a round of applause.
June 18, 2025 at 17:30 #1733702How come the Stewards couldn’t tell the difference between six and ten strokes? Were there four near-misses, or what? Otherwise, get rid of the Stewards please, if they can’t get the job done.
June 18, 2025 at 17:34 #1733704They are not allowed to make the decision on the day.
June 18, 2025 at 17:48 #1733705I’ll never get that rule in my head, CAS. The occasional racegoer finds out three days later about the disqualification and thinks such things happen secretly, because a whip offence might ruin the sport’s public reputation.
June 18, 2025 at 18:48 #1733718I see she has a ride at Chelmsford tomorrow, cant imagine she will be gung ho with the pro cush there.
But as folks say above, why the BHA wait and screw punters..
June 18, 2025 at 21:34 #1733736Bringing in a set number was the worst decision they made especially considering it was originally stated that it would only trigger a Stewards Enquiry when that number was reached but that it wouldn’t automatically mean a disqualification.
Excessive use of the whip can happen just as easily when using the whip less than the permitted number, in the same way that using it more than the permitted number would not be excessive if the horse has been given the time to respond.
I would be interested to know whether the Stewards watch every race reply and individually count all the jockeys use of the whip for each ride…..or is it only for the first three home in every race that they do this for because how would they know otherwise
June 18, 2025 at 23:31 #1733754Sad to disagree with many.
The rules are the rules , otherwise what is the point of having them , if they are not enforced.
Amateur races should either be whip free , or alternatively , the whip (because , let’s be honest , it is a sanitised version of that) should only be allowed in a corrective safety capacity.June 19, 2025 at 00:39 #1733758Rules are rules but owners shafted if horse bumped up 5 lbs on that , don’t seem fair at all .
