Martin and Belinda Keighley talk about their start in racing working for David ‘The Duke’ Nicholson, their training operation, handicappers and how it feels to lose a Cheltenham Festival winner on a a technicality. Two parts. http://www.starsportsbet.co.uk/interview-martin-belinda-keighley/
February 27, 2018 at 13:17 #1344194Nice piece Simon….sound quality much better from technical side.
Came across as a real hard working team, genuine horse people who dominate the sport at most levels, far removed from those that seem to grab most of the limelight.
Agree completely with the handicapping point, horses being penalised for not winning…..stop it immediately,if trainers know they can run on merit without being clobbered if they finnish placed, racing will be the beneficiary long term.
Everything should be done to encourage owners, theses are people who live and work within the sport, their views need to be carefully considered, outdated handicapping practice needs review.Enjoyed watching both parts……outfit to consider as the festival looms….thanks again.
February 27, 2018 at 13:32 #1344198I find it very hard to warm to those two.
Their horrible diva moment when jocking off the tidy Alain Cawley from Champion Court (a quirky low-mid 150s horse at best) was irredeemable in my eyes. The drugs scandal and this year’s financial shambles sunk their reputation even further with me.

February 28, 2018 at 13:33 #1344330So no other trainer’s jocked off a decent jockey hoping that a different jockey may find a little more improvement from a horse.
Hardly an Al Zarooni scandal. Innocent and sounds like not even an error on behalf of the Keighleys. Plenty of other trainers apply the same drug. Unfortunate that the drug was not out of the system at the time of the race. Also because it was Cheltenham became high profile.
Not sure about the financial shambles but presume he went bankrupt. Many other people in all walks of life suffer from the same fate.
