What about Scu. Interviewing the Carberry’s and sympathising with the plight of their father watching at home, Tommy CARMODY (unless he knows something we don’t!). In addition he asks Paul Carberry how he feels about riding Barrow Point.<br>
His introduction of the phrase "under punishment" when describing a horse under the whip in Al Eile’s race portrayed a poor image of racing to once a year viewers watching the BBC’s bloated dumbed down coverage.<br>Aussie Jim is probably hamstrung by the Beeb’s daft rule preventing him commentating at racecourses- he doesn’t get enough practice.
McGrath has made so many mistakes at this meeting and shows how standards at the BBC have declined. Clare Balding wins the prize for her jockey ejaculation comment!

He’s actually made a slight return to course commentary recently. Recall him in action at Carlisle and Fakenham this winter.
Never really rated him as a competent race reader and I’m not keen on the Oz twang.
This has been the worst BBC coverage of racing I have ever seen.Today waqs slightly better but the last two days could have come from any couse anywhere,it so lacked atmosphere.<br>My biggest pet hate4 of their commentator is when he referes to the word position as "posi" grrrrrr
He was a good commentator, gone completely wrong over the last few years.
He’s got lazy. Every race commented on the same, "out deeper on the track", "pozi", "further back", "further back in the field" etc, etc – he clearly doesn’t learn the colours in advance of the race and needs the verbal ticks to give him time to look colours up (I thought he was better in the National which I bet he’d prepped properly for).
It’s a shame because I like the guy and I really want him to improve.
Ridiculous that next to no-one gets tol hear the excellent John Hunt on the radio.
Richard Hoiles commentated on one of the races yesterday I think, decent commentator indeed. The Cat continues to improve too.
Is Simon Holt contracted to only commentate for Ch. 4?

Nothing to do with Jim but with the bbc cameras trained on Silver Birch and Slim Pickings on the run in the run of McKelvey was almost missed.

The ejaculation comment caused great hilarity in my household. Perhaps proof of the pressure presenters are under to find the right words…
Glad someone else noticed Balding’s "ejaculating jockeys forward" comment. I thought I was hallucinating. And why use three words when you can use two? Surely one can’t ejaculate backwards?

it’s not harsh at all.  He continuely trips over and corrects his own mistakes. This is very poor. His level of preparation and speed of thought is just not good enough, he might as well be watching a different race.
Saying that "Albertas Run has sprinted three lengths clear!" when it’s bearly one in front with numerous horses in with a chance, is very bad.  Then to simply concentrate on the gambled on "Refinement", only to see it flatten out, is worse.
Aussie Jim’s commentry was a gamble, this is not racereading. Sack him.

He’s poor, misses many fallers. I believe John Hanmer is still in the background as his spotter which can’t help. I’ve noticed recently when McGrath does manage to see a horse make a mistake he often dwells on and over exaggerates the seriousness of the error.<br>
I noticed many mistakes over the three days, up until the point that I was getting infuriated with the amount of fallers McGrath was missing, and the slowness of which he was picking out horses and naming them.
He’s deteriorating more and more and it’s about time the BBC drafted someone else in. He missed a good few fallers out the back in the National itself. Overall I think with the more established commentators, it’s laziness. The young upstarts are more likely to put the effort in to prove themselves.
