What is going on with the Croc this week….dreadful commentary at times and in fact woeful on more than one occasion.
I wonder where the Majestic Richard Hoiles is? <!– s:shock: –>

April 9, 2010 at 17:24 #288953It’s just a sad fact of life that, for most of us anyway, as we get older the brain is not as sharp as it once was and there’s a tendency for the thoughts not to be in synchronisation with the words. Added to this is the stress of being aware of the slowing down which only serves to make matters worse.
As with footballers, perhaps his manager needs to make the hard decision to persuade Jim that his talents might be better served in another role. Difficult choices.
Similarly, as Cormack alluded to yesterday, the once-great Peter Alliss is not the voice of vitality and freshness he once portrayed.
The seasons are a changin’ ……April 9, 2010 at 17:29 #288958I wonder where the Majestic Richard Hoiles is?

Sharing the RUK commentary with Mark Johnson and Stewart Machin. Not sure which of the three has the ultimate honour of leading the Grand National commentary this time around – it was Mr Johnson in 2009.

April 9, 2010 at 19:18 #288997Alex Steedman who was doing the Aintree TV had Mark Johnson over for a chat and he said that he is covering the Bechers,Foinavon,Canal and Valentines section this year so that means its either Stewart or Richard doing the other parts.
Richard did the Topham from the Stands today as Mark did the Foxhunters yesterday.
April 10, 2010 at 10:34 #289180Embarrasing at times! Thank god there"s not an Australian horse running,i have never heard such a biased opinion from a commentator!Mind you have you seen his Binoculars? They look like something from the Graf spee!
April 10, 2010 at 10:54 #289187Makes you wonder what Stephen Wallis the Newmarket supremo was listening to when he signed McGrath up for last years Guineas Festival and described him as the "best in the business"
One or two "commentators" shouldn’t be allowed near a commentary box – McGrath, Goode & Cattermole for starters.April 10, 2010 at 11:18 #289191I generally like Jim McGrath’s commentaries but I did notice that on thursday, at the tail end of Menorah’s race, he failed to spot or call the fast finishing and eventual winner until quite close home.

April 10, 2010 at 11:53 #289202Himself, ditto Wayward Prince yesterday.
It’s a shame, as he comes across a really decent bloke, but he has not had a good week.
April 10, 2010 at 12:09 #289204Particularly when he said we have another fantastic card here at ascot hopefully someone told him he was at aintree.
April 10, 2010 at 12:10 #289205To maintain a high standard of commentary, as with any other job, requires practice. As a commentator for the BBC, Jim gets very little opportunity, and most of it is flat racing, so even less chance to become familiar with the colours associated with N H racing.
Until fairly recently, the BBC wouldn’t allow it’s main commentator to sully himself with a position on the regular commentary roster. Even though that ban has now been relaxed, Jim doesn’t get many days work – perhaps by his own choice, perhaps because the courses already have their preferencs built up over many years.
Given how little racing the BBC now cover, it’s hard to imagine any of the top men wanting the job while Ch4/RUK can offer them more work.

I would have to disagree he gets little racecourse work, he gets plenty and has done so for a few years since the BBC relaxed their ban with no improvement in his performance.
As the BBC now have no ban can’t see it as a negative to having the job, John Hunt seems to have few problems with combining the two.
Although the BBC covered a lot more racing in his day I bet Peter O’Sullevan commentated on less races in a year than Jim does now, Peter was confined to the BBC and just the live races they covered.
I would suggest you’re either a good commentator or you’re not.April 10, 2010 at 20:56 #289441I would have to disagree he gets little racecourse work, he gets plenty and has done so for a few years
Added to the Racetech roster in the second half of 2006.

Thanks graysonscolumn, as I thought, well into his 4th year, time enough for plenty of practice.

The Graf Spee

Think Jim should be sunk without trace too.

I wonder where the Majestic Richard Hoiles is?

The majestic Hoiles was at Ayr yesterday commentating on the Scottish National, his commentary was appalling.

April 18, 2010 at 15:27 #290995Is it just me that thinks something is going wrong with commentary lately? They all seem to take an age to report fallers.
