The best result for the young lad – but not the correct one.

    Michael McAlister

The Disciplinary Panel held an enquiry to consider whether or not Michael McAlister, a conditional jockey, had committed a breach of Rule 157 of the Rules of Racing, concerning the running and riding of LORD SAMPOSIN in the Dobbs Finale & Future Best Wishes Novices’ Steeple Chase at Carlisle on 10th April 2008. The matter was referred to the Disciplinary Panel by the Carlisle Stewards following their enquiry of the same day.

The Panel heard representation on behalf of the Authority and from McAlister’s legal representative. It also viewed video recordings of the race.

The Panel noted that the Authority, having carried out a full investigation, through the Integrity Department, into McAlister’s riding, and whether or not he had deliberately ridden LORD SAMPOSIN in the way he did so as to facilitate Tony Dobbin winning his last race as a licensed jockey, had found no evidence to support such an allegation. Accordingly, in accepting McAlister’s explanations that the reason he had not driven the gelding into the second-last fence was because of the error the gelding had made at the third-last, and that he had accidentally, and not deliberately, dropped his reins a few strides before the winning post, the Authority offered no evidence against McAlister in respect of a possible breach of Rule 157 over his riding of LORD SAMPOSIN.

The Panel took the view that McAlister ride throughout the race was a positive one, and as a consequence satisfied the requirement of the Rules of Racing that every horse should run on its merits. The Panel found McAlister not to be in breach of Rule 157.

    12th June 2008

    Notes for Editors:

    1. The Panel for the hearings was: Duke of Roxburghe (Chairman), Richard Gould and Mrs J Cavendish

Paddy Power knocked back my £0.37 bet.

that result is wrong, it doesn’t really bother me and you understand why the young man didn’t ride as well as he perhaps could have done but it was there for all to see. I watched it at doncaster breeze up sales in a room full of notable trainers including those who also trained over jumps and it was quite clear watch they thought about it…
