He continues to say Mike Smith should "hang his head in shame".
Anyone here tempted to tell Chapman to just shut up. Its funny how he’s not so vocal about Jamie Spencer when he messes up in his usual manner 3/4 times a month during the flat season.
I’m not going to comment on what I thought of Smiths ride as my point isn’t about that, my point is how he feels obliged to publicy slate Mike Smith but shys away from slating jockeys at home.

His appraisal of Mike Smith’s ride was blinkered, over the top and frankly bordered on the ridiculous, but he doesn’t shy away from criticising anyone.

And so he should! I reacted instantly to the ride by putting it up as "The Worst ride ever"! I have since asked family members and friends to comment on what they thought happened to the horse when i stop the replay after 2 furlongs! "No way does it win from there" "The horse is pulled up" "The jockeys taking the P*ss" "It gets up in a photo" was about the closest guess i got and anyone who thinks Zenyatta shouldn"t have won after that ride is 100% right! Anyone who thinks she should have won after that ride is wrong! Anyone who thinks she shouldn"t have won is wrong, anyone who thinks she should have won easily is right! There is no Grey area with this one its clear as day!

Your daughters know quite a bit about horse racing, do they?
November 18, 2010 at 20:22 #328540Personally, I would have left out the words "Mike Smith on Zenyatta", and saved the rest as a template….

I just dont take this worst ride ever malarky. A lot of pocket talking from a lot of people.
You will see equally poor rides in the UK every single week.
Example: A J Whitehead on Jeanry at Bangor last week.
There will be another example this week, and one again next week.
The only reason people are slating him over the worst ride ever is because of the occasion.

Jim Whitehead owns and trains Jeanry, Joncol.

Apologies I meant to say C D Timmons.
My point is if you genuinely feel that Mike Smiths ride was the worst in history then Im guessing its because you backed her or you got caught up in the occasion which many people did.
It was not the worst ride ever it was not the worst ride of the year, in fact it wasnt even the worst ride of the month because of Mr Timmons.
It was an overeaction.
People giving out about the ride – watch last years BC, you knew how she was going to be ridden

November 18, 2010 at 21:22 #328559Matt Chapman is very knowledgeable for sure and he has upset me and many others on many occasions. the way he goes ‘OTT’ is a disgrace and to be fair he has toned it down a bit over the last couple of years. I do hope he makes the effort to stop these rantings before he becomes as obnoxious as Mcririck ! You have two ears and 2 eyes but only one mouth….please Matt use them in the same proprtion. Otherwise he will eventually end up in the libel courts, or charged with bringing the sport into disrepute.
November 19, 2010 at 00:56 #328583I’ve written enough on Zenyatta’s ride in the Breeders Cup section on this forum, so will keep things to just Chappers.
I think he is very wrong in this case. It is a shame Chappers and Boycie don’t appear on the same programme. Because Sean would pull Matt’s Zenyatta arguement to shreds. Chappers is possibly forced in to continuing the Mike Smith rubbish, by his OTT comments on the original broadcast.
To be fair, Chappers is OTT on British, Irish and USA racing, so at least he’s consistent.
Value Is EverythingNovember 19, 2010 at 08:21 #328591He spoils the racing for me, when bringing this up with Simon Holt in Q&A he suggested the mute button, find that on a par with telling a pundit "have you ever ridden" when they criticise a ride.
Anyone is entitled to an opinion but why does he have to keep repeating himself over and over again? He’s worse than McCririck for repeating himself and it’s boring.November 19, 2010 at 09:54 #328595We all know what Matt Chapman is like so there are now surprises with him he is OTT many times he is knowledgeable at times but he simply cant seem to stop his verbal diarrhoea my problem with the ride was the beating the horse got.

Matts reaction to this ride is bang on,it makes me wonder what those that complain only about the beating the filly got are on! Had she been put in the race at some point during the first six furlongs she would without question won comfortably and her panic stricken jockey would never have had to resort to the ugly tactics! as for the "Grey Man" Sean pulling Matts arguement to shreds, dont make me laugh! Boycie is the diplomats, diplomat!

Talking about something that has already been covered by the jockey himslef who said "I gave her too much to do" is like washing a handkerchief for entertainment.
Mike Smith got it right 19 times and got it very wrong once. I see no grounds for an argument about that.
November 19, 2010 at 16:17 #328654One thing Chapman doesn’t do is sit on the fence, and I certainly applaud the guy for that.
Whether it was a genuine overreaction, or not, I’m unsure. The vast majority watching the race were rooting for the big mare – that I’m very sure about – and Chapman was speaking for every passionate Zenyatta fan on an occasion when it wasn’t a crime to be a tad irrational.
His ‘overreaction’ represented how the vast majority felt – you only have to look at the response on these pages in the aftermath of the event to understand that.
It wasn’t a time to be analytical – it was a time to be emotional.
Well done to Chapman for understanding that. When Big Mac was harping on about Zenyatta’s price and repective value, Chapman was correct when he stated that the Breeders’ Cup Classic was about the occasion, not the betting market. Again, he deserves a lot of credit for understanding that.
In my opinion, ‘Big Mac and Chapman TV’ is always entertaining and the Breeders’ Cup was no different.
As for Smith’s ride, I submitted my analysis in the ‘Zenyatta – that ride’ thread. Smith didn’t get his fractions wrong, but his performance in the stretch was akin to a 7lb claimer, and when the difference between success and failure is that small, Smith has to shoulder some of the repsonsibility.

Why? we can all have an opinion ourselves, what’s so good about a presenter having an opinion especially when it’s rammed down viewers by an egomaniac.
Sean Boyce is often accused of fence sitting (incorrectly) but I find that a good betting booth presenter is often identified like a good referee by him going unnoticed throughout the shift/match. Leave the real stars of the sport to do the talking not some drama queen of a presenter. - AuthorPosts
