There is no right or wrong here IMO, it is a question of personal taste on presenter style. Personally, I think MC is brilliant. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and how dare he, fun!

It seems Clare Balding was the one who ousted him from the presentations at Epsom

Say no more, the outcome of the fall was 100% certain once the horse hit the deck. No need for celebrations, IF YOU HAVE SOME CLASS. Which he sadly doesn’t…..

But very nice to see that he got some bashing from other Twitter users.

A lot of these celebs have people tweeting on their behalf
Matt should know better than writing for the Sun anyway, that paper should of been shut down years ago

The guy is a bit of a clown and this is a bit insensitive but not sure he deserves crucifying. I don’t do Twitter but I can’t imagine this is a regular occurrence, surely he’s better than that.

It was sad and a little bit shocking to see the horse fall like that and I like most others knew that it was a fatal one.

At the very worst it was an ill judged tweet but is it worth getting angry or upset about? Not even close.

Even if we give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that the tweet was written on his behalf, he’s had plenty of time to apologise for the inappropriate celebration done on his behalf. Assuming he watched the race then no lover of horses would have been gloating about a winner tipped in a rag. He’s not much better than someone who’d cheer the demise of a stricken horse.

I could take or leave his buffoonish persona but after this, he’s gone down massively in my estimation.

I like to think I care about the racehorses and am more emotionally affected by the fatalities than many – I’m a regular in the Memorials section with personal tributes. I also think it’s OK to celebrate a winner in a race which featured a fatal fall. Chapman is a noted animal lover (actually cried on air on ATR when Mighty Fine died a few years ago!) and I don’t think his tweets undermine that.

I don’t think it’s hypocritical to be happy to win and sad about a death at the same time. If you bet on racing but are overly morbid when something bad happens, there is a massive contradiction in your ethical standpoint in the first place.

I’m not trying to pick on you RubyLight, but you’re the thread starter and the outraged party here so I’ll use you as the best example. You were giving it the big ‘ei ei’ on here a few weeks ago when you backed Johnny Neesom’s dubious 100/1 winner. That suggests your conscience has digested the facts of the matter and decided that ALTHOUGH horses die regularly in our sport IT IS STILL OK to bet and run around high-fiving when you have a winner. For what it’s worth, I’ve reached the same conclusion.

With that in mind, I think it’s a little precious to object in such a microcosm situation. How different is it to back a winner in a RACE where one horse died to backing a winner in a SPORT where numerous horses die? No difference for me.

Not really an example of it here maybe but Chapman is definitely on the missing list when it comes to horse welfare as is clearly evidenced by his intolerance to any discussions involving a reduction of use of the whip in Racing.

It’s such a shame that Chapman can’t get his act together and sort out his glitches ( silly OTT voice overs and heavy handed attempts to try and make things fun) because his knowledge of form and punditry on the Opening Show for example is knowledgable, heartfelt and way better than anyone else’s so to dismiss him as a total idiot would be a mistake…..he just needs to watch himself back and go easy on the cringe factor.

I think it is a huge difference between backing a winner in a race like yesterday’s and keeping your mouth shut or going public with it on Twitter. No need for “Yahoos” or anything like that when maybe the race sponsor who lost a horse in a race named after another of his lost heroes is watching the race or even presenting winning connections with the trophy. That is my point….

And my celebrations about the 100/1 winner mentioned by Jonathan Neesom were more about acknowledging him rather than my tipping skills. I didn’t pick it on my own, I just made the right clicks shortly before the race. In addition to that, if there is no sad outcome to the race, why shouldn’t you have reason to celebrate a winner at a rather unique price?

I also had a 25 pound reverse forecast in the Ryanair Hurdle a few days ago which won me a little over two grand. But because of the fact that a superstar horse might have run its last race and a lot of punters burnt their fingers and maybe even more with an odds-on shot, I decided to keep it quiet.

Perhaps next time I should start a new thread about “morons backing long odds-on shots in Grade 1 races”. Cause you have to be really stupid go all in at 2/11 in a Grade 1 race…..

    .

    Agree with this, well said.

Matt Chapman divides opinions because of the way he does his job, but like or loathe him, anyone who follows racing knows of his love of the game and love of horses. He should have thought more about what was said, it was just an ill timed comment and nothing more. We all do it – LS referred to Many Clouds as the ‘horse who dropped dead after the line’ the other day, far worse than what MC said IMO

I really dislike Chapman, he really ruins the ITV coverage for me, the quicker he goes the better.
However to be fair to Chapman, (difficult for me I know), he was at Newbury and possibly didn’t see the fall of the horse, if he had done, if as an earlier poster said that he loves animals, then he might not have posted. He could have apologised though and especially that the horse was owned by the sponsor.
He isn’t funny, he’s pathetic and I think his attitude is bad for image of racing as he will hardly attract new viewers and he annoys many of the regulars too.

I think he’s brilliant! He gives the sport a well needed boost of energy and enthusiasm. I like the fact he speaks his mind, knows what he is talking about (more often than not) and is not afraid to say what he thinks. Whilst I think he is great, I can 100 per cent understand how someone could really dislike him.

I ebb and flow on Chapman. He’s a bit bigtime for it now but used to love hearing him on CoralTV and in the booth on ATR/TheRacingChannel before he was quite such a big deal. He had an opinion (and a half decent one!) on every single race be it UK, Irish, greyhounds or US racing – I think few study as hard as he does for a broadcast.

On the flipside, some of his stuff is dreadful. On The Line is everything bad about racing.
