Seeing as he is unbackable, and virtually unbeatable over 2m – I’ve wondered, where are the horses that beat him in France, (albeit over more than 2m)? How good are they?
And is he ‘The Champion Chaser of Europe?’March 6, 2009 at 14:42 #213794Remember Rose was the horse that beat Master Minded but that was over 2 and half miles, rather than 2 miles.
Remember Rose also beat Atamane, who appeared in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot this season. However, that was just over 2 miles, and obviously the Long Walk Hurdle is a completely different ball game, and Atamane was beaten out of sight on the day when Punchestowns was very impressive.
I dont know when or where Remember Rose is running next either.
March 6, 2009 at 15:05 #213801Remember Rose won the Prix Haye Jousselin in November (French King George) and was beaten in last years Grande Steeplechase De Paris – both over 3m.
He’s currently regarded as one of the top three ‘chasers in France (Princesse D’Anjou – dual Grande Steeplechase winner being the best of them).
As for MM – Ruby rode him in his final race for Guilaume Macaire (a 4yo Chase) in which he was 8 lengths second to the above.
The other horses to beat Master Minded in France are Pensamor, White Stripe and City Note over hurdles, none of which have done much for the form since. MM’s only other defeat in France came when falling in the Prix Duc D’Anjou and in the Prix Jean Stern.
March 6, 2009 at 15:08 #213804IMO he’s the best Chaser in Europe – there’s various factors that won’t have played to MM’s chances in France. I do however feel that it will take something extra special to go to France and succeed (hence partly my exceptionally high opinion of Hurricane Fly). You need both speed and class to be successful in France.
Even other top horses like Kauto Star were well beaten in France whilst good horses to travel over here such as Douze Douze, Chicuelo, Tango Royal who were in the top bracket of 3 and 4yo chasers over in France haven’t been nearly as successful over here, albeit in DD’s case under at least one particularly dodgy ride.

Just for accuracy’s sake, Martin; Jousellin is around 3m3f, and the Grande-Steeplechase around 3m5f.
March 6, 2009 at 15:19 #213811I missed out "+"

Proper staying chases none of this 3m 2f rubbish
March 6, 2009 at 15:30 #213816There you go Andy, Martin is the one you want to speak to about French racing.
That is if he has time in-between applying for French citizenship.
March 6, 2009 at 16:12 #213835Cheers, thanks!!
Just think we can be a little parochial when it comes to our top Jump horses.
For all we know there maybe discussions on ‘LeRacingforum’ – saying their chasers are the best.March 6, 2009 at 16:23 #213841British jumps racing is particularly insular – why run for £2,500 when you can run in a regular handicap/conditions hurdle for 40,000 Euro’s. Also easier to pick up a nice horse in a claimer for 18,000 Euro’s tops.

For all we know there maybe discussions on ‘LeRacingforum’ – saying their chasers are the best.I agree with you about Parochialism. I think particularly in mainland UK in the sense that if a horse were to run very well at Tracks here and than fail to do the same in a trip to france or Ireland, this would be forgiven as being a bad traveller. If it works in reverse, we tend to be dismissive of the ability of the horse in question.
I imagine the French assume when a UK or Irish raider gets stuffed in there champion hurdle, that he was probably over rated anyway.

March 6, 2009 at 17:55 #213882You’d be surprised at some of the prices – the British and Irish jockeys tend not to get slated so much over there if the horse is beaten, probably due to the likes of Carberry, Gallagher and McKeown all regularly appearing at the big tracks.
