Sorry Golden Miller, I usually agree with most things I see you put on here but to target Liverpool/Everton fans for the incident at Haydock is daft. With regards to the Millwall/Everton fighting any premier league team going to Millwall in a cup match will be attacked. I’m not going into too much detail about the football incidents but for you to blame no game for LFC/EFC this weekend for the incident at Haydock is a bit of a cheap shot.

I live in Liverpool, I regularly travel to local tracks during both NH/Flat season. Mainly to Chester, Aintree, Haydock and occasionally Bangor.

I often take my son who is now 8 and as a result a rarely drink alcohol on course. I do make myself aware of large groups of ‘Lads’ who are having a day out at the races and tend to distance us from them just in case there is any kick offs. These groups as we know usually involve a heavy drinking session and as the day goes they crack open the cocaine to keep them going. This is when a bump or a losing bet can then cause murder.

However I have only noticed a few similar incidents during my many visits to these racecourses. I was at Haydock on Saturday and witnessed the incident, it was actually local lads who were at it not Scousers or Mancs who were looking to an alternative to watching the football.

I honestly think its an issue in society in general, some people just love a good kick off when they have had a drink. I think we will see more and more of these incidents over the year as the temperature heats up(Not because the football is finished, more heat=more booze, more booze=more beak). People love the group/social event days out more than ever and as alcohol is so cheap they end up being hammered really early then get out the Colombian goods to keep themselves going. Once this happens they think they can take on the world in a royal rumble or believe they are Tony Montana. Racecourses seem to be encouraging Stag/Hen do’s and group days out at the races(Punters packages etc..) and this will be the target audience who attend.

What can racecourses actually do? Eject drunk groups(Cause further trouble at the time), Search them on the way in(Is it possible to search 10k plus people thoroughly on entering a racecourse?) Bring in a stronger police presence? Sniffer dogs?

I’ll continue to take my son to Horse Racing as well as taking him to football to watch Liverpool as we both love the whole experience. People are tw*ts and will ruin many things for many people unfortunately, However I wont let it stop me enjoying it.

As I said, Coggy, I do know the area. I’m even planning to move to St Helens! So it’s not regional bias and I did mention last May’s brawls at southern tracks. Just suggested Saturday might have been more than a coincidence because Everton fans have been in the news twice lately. However, thanks Krambust, it was local lads.

Society’s problem but still relatively rare at racecourses compared to football. Courses always seem to be caught off guard and perhaps could anticipate fixtures where extra ‘policing’ might be required. However, I suspect because of the cost of this tracks are reluctant to shell out on more security when it mostly will prove an unnecessary expense. But as it’s a wider societal issue why should sport have to pay!

Oh, well. No one likes us, we don’t care :)

Do they have girls carrying beer and plastic glasses on their backs at Haydock still? I remember seeing this, even in the expensive stands, and being horrified, especially the sexism.

seen it suggested that one thing Haydock could do would be to reintroduce their former ban on taking drinks out of the bar area, on the basis that drinks set down in other, often unexpected, places are easily knocked-over to provide flashpoints.

not eliminate but might reduce the problem.

Would be nice if they banned drinks outside the cars at Aintree, even the roof terraces are no longer drink free anymore sadly.

While the tracks all ‘deplore’ ‘take very seriously’ blah, blah, blah, the margins in booze are huge and matter more to the exec than the occasional news headline
