Marten Julian’s Cheltenham Bulletin Books (see below) are highly regarded and I am delighted that Marten has offered two great prizes for TRF to give away in this special Cheltenham warm-up competition.
RACING GOLF –
The competition will run in two parts with a golfing theme – Round 1 will take place this Saturday (3rd Mar) and round 2 on the following day, Sunday (4th Mar). The rules are the same for both rounds.
Rules (please read carefully) – You have to select 9 horses from that day’s racing (Sat or Sun – depending which day it is). You cannot make more than 1 selection from each race. You need 4 reserves (in order of preference) as well.
Each selection equates to a single hole in your golf round (so, nine holes each day).
Your ‘score’ for each horse will be calculated as follows and is based on the finishing position and starting price of each horse.Scoring –
Starting price –
If your horse starts at 5/2 or shorter it counts as 3 shots.
If your horse starts at higher than 5/2 but 5/1 or less it is 2 shots
If your horse starts at higher than 5/1 but less than 10/1 it is 1 shot
If your horse starts at 10/1 or more it is 0 shotsFinishing Position –
If the horse wins it counts as 1 shot
2nd = 2 shots
3rd = 3 shots
Out of first 3 = 5 shotsSo, for example – if my horse finishes 2nd at 7/1 it would be 3 shots taken for that hole (1 shot for being 7/1 plus 2 shots for finishing second) and so on for all 9 of your horses.
If a race has fewer than 5 runners it will be considered VOID and your reserves will come into play (same for non-runners).The player with the lowest aggregate score for all 9 holes wins that particular day. The scores for Sat/Sun winners will be compared and the lowest score (Sat Vs Sun) will get the top prize and the other person gets the second prize.
First prize = A free subscription to Marten Julian’s Cheltenham Package (includes online pre-publication preview access to his Cheltenham Bulletin Book, hard copy version of the Cheltenham Bulletin Book, Daily email updates from Marten in the week leading up to the meeting and Online supplements covering all four days of the Festival. This is a FANTASTIC prize (rrp £50)!
Second prize = A free copy of Marten Julian’s Cheltenham Bulletin Book. With a host of features this is a must-have for anyone looking to bet on or simply enjoy the 2012 Cheltenham Festival.
UK racing only – closing deadline for entries ten mins before published off time of first race in the UK that day.
Let me know if any ruling queries.
Saturday selections on this thread please.

March 2, 2012 at 00:22 #394424Here’s a couple of examples of comments Marten made in last year’s Bulletin –
"
Divers
is trained by Ferdy Murphy, who won this race with L’Antartique in 2007.
The trainer has displayed a deft touch in preparing horses for valuable staying handicaps in the spring and Divers showed he was coming to hand nicely when winning a 2m 4f novices’ event at Musselburgh last month. He displayed good battling qualities to win up the demanding Carlisle hill earlier in the season and then ran better than his finishing position suggests behind Time For Rupert here in November.
The trainer attributes last season’s indifferent form to a muscle problem and with two wins and a third from four spins over fences, and with his favoured good ground expected to prevail, he looks an interesting and leading contender."
AND
"Noble Prince could prove a real threat to the front two on good ground. The seven-year-old has been crying out for the return to a longer trip but he is, like Hurricane Fly, by Montjeu who has not yet managed to sire a winner at the track. Noble Prince ran a blinder in last year’s County Hurdle despite finding the trip too sharp – he should have run in the Coral Cup and proved the point next time out when running an excellent fourth to Quevega in a Grade 1 race over three miles at Punchestown.
This season he has run three times over fences, all at around two miles, winning at Punchestown before twice finishing second to Realt Dubh at Leopardstown. Noble Prince, who was a Group-class performer on the Flat in France, has the ability to win a race of this type and the combination of good ground and the step up in trip could be precisely what he requires. His poor JPA rating (see above) is the chief concern.
Mr Gardner has the potential to improve on his recent achievements. A winner once from three starts over hurdles, he made all to win a modest race at Huntingdon in January and then ran third to Medermit and Captain Chris at Sandown. Not yet an accomplished jumper, his inexperience may find him out.
I have been waiting for circumstances to come right for Noble Prince and take him to put right his sire’s poor record at the track.

A horse finishing outside the first three will score 5 points – (originally 4) mistake on my part when publishing the initial rules.
I’ve contacted Andrew and rooster to ask whether they want to amend their entries.
