I don’t dispute Cecil’s huge efforts to get back to the summit in racing. He gave up alcohol at a lateish age as a first thing and went through long periods of depression. He did initially marry into the job though and Warren place was a marvellously historic place to start. A legend indeed – despite these gifts.
In 2001 or 2002 Betfair stated that 7 people out of a 1000 were earning 15k or more. First of all there were a lot more mugs about then, hence more value, but Betfair was a business and well it may have been in their interests to enhance the figure. I personally think the figure was accurate as Andrew Black was an honest operator – but of course his power did wane as the business grew and he could have been reined in by Wray who was more or less joined to him at the hip.
Now a double yolker is 1000-1 and that would be much nearer today’s mark.
January 17, 2021 at 17:21 #1518022Thanks for your Industry take on the betting escapee Ian – very interesting indeed – and yes he’s nicely sat on the dock of a bay wasting police time.
Tortoise…Most spend a third of their lives looking for a house, the next third paying for it and the last third changing it for something smaller or moving in with a bunch of smellies.
I was lucky enough to inherit one at birth and so spend the whole of my life following my bliss – i.e the garden path.

Last news I can find of him on Betfair was from over eight years ago – Happy Valley • September 25, 2012 9:41 PM BST
mark was living down in St Ives, i believe. Known him since we worked at Trainers Record and then at the Racing Post. A thoroughly decent and genuine and enthusiastic guy who doesn’t have a bad bone in his body. I think he got into some kind of evening-class teaching at some point, maybe around the Kings Cross area, and was also in politics with the Lib Dems. Mark if you are reading this your old mucker from Brighton sends you his very best wishes. Pricewise was a touch of genius on your part.January 17, 2021 at 19:22 #1518032Anybody with an interest in Mark Coton I can highly recommend the 1/2 hour film on youtube Always Bloody Dreaming.
January 17, 2021 at 21:03 #1518039The biggest cost in life is borrowing money ….I haven’t borrowed a penny since 2001

January 17, 2021 at 22:34 #1518046It is an austere view, however- the borrower becomes the lenders slave ( Proverbs )

Borrowing money has surely been the best way to riches for some time now re mortgages.
January 18, 2021 at 13:53 #1518078I read his Value Betting when I started trying to figure out the best way to bet (I’m still trying) and I found his approach soothing and reassuring. The 100 Hints book was a much harder read, it had an edge of desperation to it, as though he was teetering on the brink of either losing everything or going to live in a monastery.
As a fellow ‘butterfly’ I’ve always had a soft spot for him, based purely on his writing, and I hope he is okay.

An excellent policy: “Neither a borrower nor a lender be.”

Mad as a March Hare.. I love him! Wonder what he does now to earn a crust? Poor bugger doesn’t look like he’s got a penny to scratch his arse with.
Cheers, Corm

January 22, 2021 at 10:44 #1518742Haven’t watched it. Borrowing the biggest cost? In life?
What utter bollocks
Costs are equated to benefits and ifs benefits equal or outweigh costs then clearly the actual cost is zero. Pretty obvious
January 23, 2021 at 09:45 #1518899Clive if you borrow money then the money you earn goes to the people you borrowed from ….what exactly is bollocks ….interest rates maybe low but you still pay back more than you borrow ….can you tell me what the interest rates will be in 5 years ..10 years , the point I’m making is that I live within my means , this has made me financially comfortable and in the current climate has meant I’m not suffering or stressing like many …to each there own

January 24, 2021 at 19:21 #1519409It always struck me that Mark enjoyed the limelight and the big stage when things were going his way, but that, ultimately, he was far too gentle and fragile a man for the cut-throat Metropolis.
I think he probably “got the value” by moving to Cornwall.
You can’t eat value, however.
