Hey guys another bit of jargon in the horse racing puzzle I’ve encountered is the Mares Allowance. To my surprise this doesn’t seem to be denoted on the racecards are am I gravely mistaken ? Is the discerning punter simply expected to know this or have I missed something ? On the following racecard: https://www.racingpost.com/results/183/galway/2020-07-30/763733 the winner Court Maid was said to be in receipt of a 7lb Mares Allowance yet I can only see a difference of 5lb between her and the top-weighted. Horse racing hurts my brain!
March 24, 2021 at 05:30 #1532125Are you sure?
12 stones minus 11 stones 7 pounds = 7 poundsMarch 24, 2021 at 07:36 #1532128The results page “card” after the race is different to the racecard shown before the race, in that the racecard beforehand shows the weight the horse should carry before any variable changes like conditional jockeys’ claims, jockeys putting up overweight and winners’ penalties (I think) are applied. The “fixed” differences are accounted for in the weight printed in the “before” racecard ie 7lb mares’ allowance and weight for age (I think in your example, Rightplacerighttime got 1lb off for being a 5 year old)…as these are factors that cannot change between the racecard being printed and the race being run.
I don’t think the “before” racecard including the journo’s pre race analysis and selection is available on the Racing Post website after the race but on the sporting life website you can pick whether to look at racecard or results page:

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 24, 2021 at 07:47 #1532130Just to add to the black hole that mysteriously sucks time away while you’re happily moseying through form, have a look at the irishracing.com website when looking at Irish form – if your horse has appeared in the stewards’ report for any race, a green icon shows up for that day and when you look at the results page for that race, you can click on the stewards’ report. Very handy, though they don’t have the BHA reports for British races shown in this way. The “quote” section for each horse’s form page is also interesting- generally only includes the quotes when they win but interesting to scan back through and see if they said things like “He did well to win because he hated the ground and the trip is short of his ideal trip”.

March 24, 2021 at 07:55 #1532131Ian, the other thread is discussing whether mares should get the allowance or not. This one is about how you know before and after who carries what.
March 24, 2021 at 08:07 #1532133Ah, ok!
Thanks!
