I nearly missed listening to the end of the Ballysax Stakes and the pearls of wisdom from graysonscolumn because I was concentrating on this.

I was thinking that 2m5f over Firm ground at Pontefract would make it quite easy to find the winner, so I decided to target this race and have a go at Forecasts and Tricasts, in the hope of making a killing.

I’ll be annoyed if there are any non-runners, because the trainers know in advance that the going is Firm.

51- Mr Crystal 112J 5 9-13 Micky Hammond 40 Frederik Tylicki 5 74 59 78
ch g Trempolino (USA) — Iyrbila (FR) (Lashkari)
Course winner 2m2f last time. 6 lbs higher. Hasn’t run over hdles since December, so is he fit enough? Ground okay.

135 Victory Quest 34 v 9 9-11 Mrs S Lamyman 100 Robert Winston 72 36 70
b g Victory Note (USA) — Marade (USA) (Dahar (USA))
Has run over 2m2f 3 times and 2m1f once at Pontefract, without much effect. I’m putting a line through this one, despite the fact he won 3 times at Southwell during the winter.

40- Hasanpour 9J t 9 9-6 K J Burke 0 N Callan 67 74 73
b g Dr Devious (IRE) — Hasainiya (IRE) (Top Ville)
Ran well at Huntingdon in the autumn, but that is a different kind of track from Ponte. Led approaching the straight in the Queen Alexandra. Despite him finishing tired there, I am going to give him a squeak, and will probably put him 3rd in Tricasts.

-43 Yonder 13 5 9-0 H Morrison 86 Travis Block 61 52 78
br m And Beyond (IRE) — Dominance (Dominion)
Backed her last time. (See 4.10 & 4.40 Wolverhampton thread.) Pulled in a slow race, and has kindly been dropped 2 lbs. Must be a contender.

7-6 Haldibari 14 5 8-11 S Lycett 100 T P O´Shea 58 52 60
b g Kahyasi — Haladiya (IRE) (Darshaan)
Has run 3 times in France, and once at Wolverhampton, 12f. Very difficult to judge. On breeding has as good a chance of staying 2m5f as anything else. Never run on Gd to Fm, leave alone Firm. I’l put him in the dangerous loose cannon category with Mr Crystal.

7-3 Orchard House 26J 6 8-8 Evan Williams 0 Tom Eaves 49 74 74
b g Medaaly — Louisa May (IRE) (Royal Abjar (USA))
I’m getting annoyed with these horses where one has to carefully scrutinise the past performances to separate the flat from the Hdle ones. For some reason, I’m not taking this horse seriously, despite the fact he came 3 length 3rd at 2m on Lingfield’s polytrack. 6 lbs oh.

80- Rimsky Korsakov 20J v 5 8-8 Micky Hammond 40 Paul Mulrennan 45 24 46
b g Sadler´s Wells (USA) — Tedarshana (Darshaan)
Has only had 3 runs on the Flat, all over 10f. Best finish was when beaten 26 lengths on debut. H’cap debut, could spring a surprise. 10 lbs oh.

-80 Bright Falcon 7 tv 1 4 8-7 S Parr 17 Adrian T Nicholls 60 50 65
ch g Hawk Wing (USA) — Cream Tease (Pursuit Of Love)
Wearing a visor for the first time. Wears a tt, same as when came last over 14f at Wolv and 2m at Redcar last time. Beaten 158 lengths on that occasion 7 days ago. I’m taking that at face value, and putting a line through this one.

98- Terrasini 61J 4 8-5 J Howard Johnson 0 Royston Ffrench 58 73 73
gr g Linamix (FR) — Trazando (Forzando)
Hampered when beaten 8 lengths at Beverley 2m last Summer, so I’m making him a contender.

511 Daraiym 13 4 8-3 Paul Green 50 Francis Norton 56 41 74
b g Peintre Celebre (USA) — Dararita (IRE) (Halo (USA))
Course winner last time in the Jamaican Flight. Only raised 4 lbs, so is probably the favourite.

Okay, this is how I’ve categorised them, but I had difficulty deciding whether to put Terrasini in the Major, Medium or Minor Contender category.

Major Contenders
Yonder, Daraiym

Minor Contenders
Hasanpour, Terrasini

Loose Cannons
Mr Crystal, Haldibari, Rimsky Korsakov

Ignoring
Orchard House

No Chance
Victory Quest, Bright Falcon

I suppose the simple thing to do is to have two straight tricasts
Daraiym, Yonder, Hasanpour
Daraiym, Yonder, Terrasini
and put a tenner on each.

I’ll have a look at the betting now, and have a read of what Spotlight etc say, before finally making up my mind.

It is not a normal 0-75 – I think it is still the second longest race in the Calendar, which would make it the longest h’cap in the Calendar, and therefore the longest proper race in the Calendar.

Its the longest flat handicap as the Queen Alexandra is a conditions race.

Yonder for me in this one.

Has an extra 3f to do but was only 6l behind Daraiym over the course last time out.

Its not a strong renewal but should be a good race in what is one of the seasons real highlights for me, You can keep your Derbies the Ponty Marathon is a proper horse race.

Does the presence of this thread mean I’m allowed a post a ‘Hexham Four Miler’ thread next March?

Oh well, looks like I’m not ready for Tricasts – its back to win bets.

Tylicki was on Extraterrestrial for me, so I can’t complain. Perhaps need to take more note of jockey bookings. Moe had mentioned Mickey Hammond as well.

My so-called "loose cannons" came 1, 2, 3. I knew they were capable of running well, but didn’t expect them to do it today.

IMO not all races are as big as each other, and certain smaller races have more significance than bigger ones. And we all know that certain trial races which are discussed on this section will turn out to have little or no significance when the big race they are trying for comes around. I generally think the big races section is one for races which many people are likely to have an interest in.

I notice that Graysons also likes the Hexham 4 miler, and so too may Kendal Cvalier and Moehat etc who love these marathon races and I think it did have some significance in the scottish national result so, although I dont know what other people think on the matter, I personally have no real problem with there being a thread for it.

Likewise I didnt really have a massive problem with gerald putting up this thread, as it is an individual enough race, however it does appear, for future reference, that few people have a huge interest in the race, but IMO it is clearly a race that gerald finds interesting and can see why he has put it up, suspecting others too may be interested in the race.

Hi Bulwark.

Yes, if looks like I was a bit self-indulgent with this thread. I was thinking that there would be more than one other person interested in it.

On the betting side, I was very stupid doing a horse, Yonder, over 2m5f, that had pulled over 2m2f. In a lot of my threads I am doing something new, or am interested in something new. Looking at the pedigrees of the first 3, maybe I should have devoted some time to looking at the pedigrees of the placed horses in previous runnings. Instead, I thought the form of the Jamaican Flight 2 weeks ago was the most relevant thing.

What I want some advice on is this: I am interested in the next NH season, in the provincial Nationals. I am thinking of putting them in a thread entitled "Provincial Nationals 2009/10 Season". Could they all fit into one thread, or would it become unwieldy? I doubt that there would be much more than one page per race. Looking at the staying h’cap chases this season, there has been a certain narrative to it, with horses such as Mon Mome, Niche Market and Character Building taking major roles. I am wondering if there is a certain narrative to these lesser races as well. I am also interested in investigating and applying some of the hard work and knowledge of KC. As you said, KC, Moe, Rob and GC would all be interested or contribute in their various ways. I am thinking of putting it in this section, as I don’t think the people mentioned go and visit the Daily Lays & Plays or Trends & Research (Rob’s domain) section. One problem is that there seems to be two different kinds of Provincial National, one for horses rated about 125, and one for those on about 100 or so. Some of us would be interested in the former, as they are bubbling underneath the major Nationals, and some of us would be interested in the latter because we are weirdos who are interested in old, slow horses.

You dont need to ask me gerald, I’m not the "what you can talk about police". Just work away, the whole point of starting a thread is because you have a topic that wish to have discussion about with others about. The way I see it, any thread that doesnt hold any interest will soon drift out of view anyway.

IMO this section was brought about to keep most of the "talking races" from cluttering up the horseracing section, and a race doesnt necessarily need to be group or graded to be a talking race that many may have an interest in. Obviously if there was thread after thread about class5 and 6 handicaps at bath or wolves then I think people would get annoyed.

I say work away, there are several people who like the marathon chases (myself included, although I’ll more jsut try to chance my arm at picking the winner) and whether you have a thread for each national or just one overall one, doesnt really bother me personally. Obviously I’m no authority on the matter, but IMO discussion is what the forum is about and if you have something to discuss that you think others will be interested in then why the devil not.

I am only offering my own personal opinion on the matter though, it would be nice to get an idea of what a few others think on the matter.
