What a star
what racing is all about, from chaser to pretty decent flat horse is there any other sport that could throw this sort of scenario up ?May 10, 2013 at 23:33 #439260Mad Moose begs the question of how the top jumps horses would perform on the level.
Sprinter Sacre absolutely munched Mad Moose at Cheltenham earlier in the season. Mad Moose managed second in the Ormonde Stakes, so could Sprinter Sacre win a Group 1 at less than 2 miles on the flat?
May 10, 2013 at 23:46 #439263Interesting indeed, I put the question to a thread a couple of weeks back after My Tent Or Yours walked over a bunch of ex flat horses at Aintree, all highly rated. I’ve no doubt some of the very best could be class flat stayers, look at Rite Of Passage.
May 11, 2013 at 10:46 #439305I’d always wanted to see Big Bucks run on the flat; pity it won’t happen now.
May 11, 2013 at 10:52 #439308I agree it was a good performance from the old boy, and great to see.
Without wishing to put a dampener on things, I do regard the form as suspect though, to say the least.
It was essentially a 2 horse race. The winner won very easily, and the O’Brien horse either didn’t act on the track, or simply had an off day, as he was never travelling.May 11, 2013 at 11:39 #439320I agree it would be so interesting if some of the NH trainers would send their good horses over the flat. Obviously the really good ones like Sprinter Sacre would not be worth risking, but Overturn has won well on the flat. Ile De Ray is another. Rite of Passage beat a Ballydoyle blue blood to win the Gold Cup and then the stayers race on Champions Day.
May 11, 2013 at 16:10 #439340I think its certainly an interesting talking point, but it does go both ways with Triumph and Champion winning hurdler Katchit only good to notch up one Class 5 Handicap win during his flat career.
I wonder why Mad Moose doesn’t seem to want to run anywhere nowadays without Stalls? Seems odd.
May 11, 2013 at 20:35 #439364Would SS fit in a starting stall?

Why is he freakishly huge in comparison to flat racings monsters, such as Falbrav at 5yo (whom I have read was huge) for example? Genuine question.
May 11, 2013 at 20:51 #439370I really don’t know, PC. He looks big and very lengthy. I wonder what the official dimensions are for stalls?. I suppose if Black Caviar fits, anything would.

I wish weights and heights were more readily available, I’d be fascinated to research it. Yes I know, I am sad.
May 11, 2013 at 21:19 #439377Persian Punch was a very large flat racer with the breeding of an old-fashioned steeplechaser. If he could fit in the stalls, I am sure they would accommodate the likes of Sprinter Sacre.

S W Clarence was 18.1hh at the withers. He fit well enough in the gate to win 16 races including several stakes, most at Penn National.
So Sprinter Sacre shouldn’t have a problem!
