Made my day seeing him win again,I adore this horse, didnt back him because i don’t want to jinx him with my atrocious luck at the moment and what a great reception from the crowd, could he be the nation’s new darling ?
January 18, 2009 at 03:25 #204815it’s also unusual for the public to warm to a horse wearing blinkers; somehow the red blinkers are ‘him’…..agree; he is what nh is all about, and is he getting better as well???? grand horse and lovely for Tom Scudamore’s as well…great stuff……..
January 18, 2009 at 04:17 #204824What I really hated last season was him running in this, that, and everything in spring in an attempt to secure the Order of Merit.
I’m really glad he’s bounced back from that.
January 18, 2009 at 14:56 #204892Agree with Gerald and I am pleased last seasons over racing does not seem to have done any long term damage.
He is certainly a gutsy horse and he really seems to get on well with Tom – certainly one of those cases of the right jockey on the right horse and it is clear Tom adores the horse.
I did not back him either yesterday but all credit to him and it was good to see him win again. I think nowadays he is much better at around 2m 5f than 3m.
If I were connections I would give the World a swerve this year, it is looking as though it is going to be a very strong division anyway and as I said I think he is probably better at less than 3m now.
The trouble is there isn’t really anything else suitable for him at the Festival with the Coral Cup being the only 2m 5f option and I don’t see that being his sort of race.
January 18, 2009 at 15:33 #204903Yesterday, i didnt think he would win. Always used to run well won day and poor the next. Though i forgot he always runs a good race at Ascot and the opposition wasn’t brilliant. I backed Group Captain for a place, so im not complaining
January 18, 2009 at 19:04 #204945He seems to have the attitude of persian punch. Go off in front as fast as he can and even if you pass him he finds more.I still cant belive after the season he had last year how he has come out of it still in love with the game must be made of iron.
January 19, 2009 at 16:28 #205114The funny thing about Lough Derg is no one seems to think he’s going to win.
I noticed he was in the race but discarded him immediatley despite him winning last time out.
He hasn’t started fav for a race in over 20 runs and is almost 50 quid upto a pound level stake.
It’s probably down to the fact he runs some real stinkers at times but even when he’s on form the bookies offer great prices about him.
No way did I think he would raise a gallop after last season but hell was I wrong……..I thought that was the best I have ever seen him run and I’m still wiping the egg off my face
January 19, 2009 at 17:13 #205118how stupid am i, i did think he would win but backed him with two of hen knights horses, calgary bay and somersby greed is a terrible thing.
January 19, 2009 at 17:47 #205135He just loves to battle…what a scrapper!

February 15, 2009 at 00:31 #210261Well another brave, battling performance from Lough Derg.
If horses won prizes for battling then he would be top of the pile.
Yes he seems to save his very best for Ascot but his performance today was one of sheer guts over, arguably, the minimum trip for him.
Attacked on both sides he still would not go down without a fight. Many horses would have folded in the circumstances but he doesn’t know how to give up.
In the closing stages he managed to get his head back in front of Dancing Tornado when headed by him and I am pretty sure given a few more yards he would probably have had a bl**dy good go at Serabad as well.
Having said that I still cannot see him winning the World Hurdle at Cheltenham – I would rather see him go next to the Aintree Hurdle.
February 15, 2009 at 01:40 #210272I was really gutted that Lough Derg got touched off today. I don’t normally get animated watching racing on the tele but I was shouting him on and my wife must have been wondering what was happening. How does this horse keep going?

Think connections are favouring the Coral Cup now – likely to give away hulks of weight all round, but what’s new?
Tremendous animal.

That would certainly be a better Cheltenham option but it would be a hard race to win and I would still prefer to see him on a flatter track.
Having said that the old bugger will still give his all as usual
February 15, 2009 at 02:57 #210286hes class .. remember watching him get up in last race @ chelt (i think his first hurdle at chelt) was fast ground that day and a 4 runner field last race but it sticks in my mind – ap gave him a great ride and its what nh is all about = horses like him
… yes in the flesh and i wont forget it in a hurry
February 15, 2009 at 03:22 #210291I have been lucky to have been following him around this season but even knowing what he is like to be giving over a stone away to everything in that ground and rally like that is exceptional.
I thought he was beat at the line but couldn’t bring myself to say it in the slim hope he may have at least shared it. Sadly not but still a terrific reception as he walked back in.
Horse Of The Year ?
February 15, 2009 at 03:42 #210294I love Lough Derg he is such a gutsy character & fully deserves to be horse of the year but I very much doubt he will be. I was so willing him on today but alas not to be.
Is there an award for ‘The peoples Champion’ racehorse which Joe Public can vote for because I’m sure he’d win that.February 15, 2009 at 03:43 #210295I have been lucky to have been following him around this season but even knowing what he is like to be giving over a stone away to everything in that ground and rally like that is exceptional.

Horse Of The Year ?
He’s very much sneaked up on me, but I’d be close to agreeing.
