As always we look set for a highly informative Hennessy day at Leopardstown, with the cream of the Irish horses having their last runs before Cheltenham. There are four Grade 1 races and an exciting hunters chase.

Foxrock turns out for a third tough assignment in six weeks and I’d be surprised if he’s up to it, not an ideal preparation. It would be no surprise to see First Lieutenant bounce back to form on better ground, usually takes a couple of runs to blow away the cobwebs.

February 4, 2015 at 09:19 #504048Have backed Rule the World at 25s for the RSA and Shanahans at 25s for the JLT so looking forward to seeing both in action!
February 4, 2015 at 21:26 #504142Carlingford lough is getting backed in from 9/2 to 7/2. I’m going to get the last of the 4/1 tomorrow. He will also like the drying ground and looks primed to deliver for Sunday after a very impressive Lexus where he was arguably the least prepped horse and genuinely in contention hitting the last.
McKinley in the Deloitte is ridiculously underrated. Both he and silver Concorde are way over priced for the supreme novices and I will be getting stuck into both on ante post and maybe sitting back and enjoying Sundays race. Alvisio ville could be a machine… I’ll happily take any 3 or 4 from this race for the supreme novices ahead of both Douvan and Lami serge.
Great card for Sunday, can’t wait…
February 4, 2015 at 22:56 #504154The Irish Hennessey gives us the first chance to assess the form of the Lexus chase, as nothing that ran there has been out since. We are more than making up for that now though, with no less than six of the nine entries having run behind Road To Riches last time.
People will have favourite horses and various reasons regarding who will come out best this time and it makes for a competitive heat that could be tricky to call.
I was initially drawn to Carlingford Lough, based on his age and the fact that he was having his first race of the year in the Lexus. Being that bit older and having had chances already this season, Boston Bob makes less appeal. He was running on ground less than ideal last time, but some of the others were in the same boat on that ground and Bob’s been a bit disappointing for me. Backed in to 9/4 in a place, he makes about as much appeal as a dung dumpling in your Irish Stew.
On His Own ran a cracker in the Lexus after a pitiful effort in the J N Wines. He’s a Gold Cup runner up, some would say should have got the race via the Stewards. He’s a bit long in the tooth for me and I still have bitter memories of two Grand National falls when I was on at big odds. He’s as short as 3/1 and that is making the stew look less appetising by the minute.
Carlingford Lough was briefly 9/2 today and just about the last semblance of any value but that’s gone and he’s 4/1 at best and as low as 3/1 with some.
At the lowest odds for the leading three, 9/4, 3/1, 3/1 they look appalling value and even at the best odds, 3/1, 4/1, 4/1, I am not seeing any value at all.
Foxrock would be in contention if we can really believe that he ran such a big career best last time. He dropped down in trip to 2m 5f after looking to tire on heavy ground in the Irish Paddy Power, where he just held on for second. He toted 11st 8lbs to an impressive win in The Boylesports Handicap Chase (Worth 60 grand) and emerged with a new rating of 158, up 9lbs on his previous rating and he’s now a stone higher than his Paddy Power mark of 142. As Tommy says, he’s been busy but he’s had a three week break and he’s a young horse who seems to be improving. If we can believe his new mark, he’s only six lbs behind the top rated. On the downside, he steps back up in trip from his career best run and he’s a shorter price at 6/1 than the reigning Gold Cup champion Lord Windermere.
Talking of Lord Windermere, he was disappointing in The Lexus and much has been made of him being trained for just one race this season. I can’t have him here based on his two runs this year and no guarantee he’ll be fully tuned yet. Some may see 7/1 as a big price and I suppose looking at Boston Bob at 9/4 you would tend to agree but he’s just not a horse I’m a big fan of so far.
First Lieutenant has become very disappointing for me and I always oppose him these days. He seems on the way down and never quite landed the big one some thought him capable of.
An interesting race on a fascinating card but one I can’t see offering a good betting opportunity. The odds are woefully tight in places.
Good luck to all having a go.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Alvisio Ville
seems to be headed for the Neptune, based on market moves today. He’s been backed in from 20/1 to as low as 7/1 in places for that race, while heading from 8/1 to 12/1 in places for the Supreme.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 5, 2015 at 19:40 #504211Have backed Rule the World at 25s for the RSA and Shanahans at 25s for the JLT so looking forward to seeing both in action!
Think Rule The World is better at trips shorter than 3m myself so Sunday’s race is an ideal opportunity for connections to find out if he’s a JLT horse or not. JLT the probable destination for Shanahans Turn as well, although the owners also have Smashing who I prefer. That one may yet go the handicap route though. Seems to be so many good novices around this season.
February 6, 2015 at 14:28 #504267The Hennessey prices have had a shake up now that Ruby is on On His Own, rather than Boston Bob and the betting has flip-flopped in places with Boston Bob now 7/2 3rd best with Paddy Power.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 8, 2015 at 00:59 #504592Ill go with Carlingford Lough. Ran well the last day on his comeback.

February 8, 2015 at 11:36 #504627Gave in to the temptation of First Lieutenant EW at 14s in this field of 8 (touch wood). A bit soon to be writing him off as a has been, especially in fields like these.
Also, were I in Mr Cullotty’s shoes, I’d be very tempted to have it off with Lord Windermere today. This ‘all that matters for him is Cheltenham’ attitude prevailing throughout racing, is the perfect set up. So I’ve had a bit on him just in case
February 8, 2015 at 13:38 #504649Well the first of the Mullins shorties, Kalkir, got beaten again today and the one time hot favourite for the Triumph Hurdle is out to 14/1 now with today’s winner Petite Parisienne generally third favourite now behind Peace And Co and Hargam.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 8, 2015 at 14:28 #504658Another one bites the dust as Alvisio Ville buckled under pressure and the last thing the horse needs is extra distance in The Neptune, based on today’s showing.
Nichol’s Canyon is the one for money there now.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 8, 2015 at 14:55 #504663Willie lands the Hat-Trick of shorties beaten, as Apache Stronghold stays on well to collar Valseur Lido, after looking a bit short of pace earlier.
As always seems to be the case when the press shout about a stable dominating a day, it just doesn’t happen.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 8, 2015 at 16:58 #504687Well done Pointer & Sir Harry
February 8, 2015 at 17:35 #504690Having just watched the replay I think Lord Windermere was definately inittowinit.
February 8, 2015 at 20:37 #504712Well done Pointer & Sir Harry
One of those very rare days. Nichols Canyon and Regal Encore on my list also today

Some exciting stuff. Lord Windemere is hard to figure really. Hard to believe he is good enough to win another Gold Cup but maybe he is just a few pounds better at Cheltenham.

February 8, 2015 at 21:53 #504723Plenty question marks before the Hennessey race and although it pretty much panned out the way I had expected it would, the only thing I took from today’s race was that the Gold Cup winner wasn’t in the field.
As I had said before the race Foxrock had run a big personal best, on the book, on his previous start and there was money for him today but it’s hard to believe that he was quoted at 10/1 for the Gold Cup a few seconds after the race.
Carlingford Lough was my pick of the Lexus runners and I came close to going for him but decided the price wasn’t quite big enough. A nice prize for him to win but 8/1 for the Gold Cup? No thanks.
Lord Windermere must surely be somewhere near fit now and he continues to look a horse to oppose. He came into last year’s Gold Cup as an outsider and I see no value in him, particularly at the 10/1 in some places.
Boston Bob is a horse who is needing an awful lot of excuses these days. From a ridiculous 9/4 at one stage in the build up to the race, he was pretty much friendless at 5/1 and we saw why, as he never looked like winning.
On His Own had a poor day at the office, he never really jumped well enough to make the front running tactics look like paying off. All three major rivals reversed the Lexus form with him today and he’s becoming frustrating to follow.
I am satisfied with Carlingford Lough winning here, as I don’t see him, or any of today’s runners turning the form round with the improved Lexus winner Road To Riches in the Gold Cup. Road To Riches has improved for a change of diet, according to his trainer, and I hope he’s wiring into it good style on the build up to the Gold Cup. Knowing my luck, a news story will break, where it is revealed that the horse has been tucking into
"Al Zarooni Hay"
for the past several months

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 8, 2015 at 21:54 #504724Will Morris make the Lieutenant run in the National?
FL isn’t the same horse he used to be. I thought running the National might be an interesting alternative… - AuthorPosts
