Hugo Palmer (stable in good form) sets a puzzle here, being responsible for the two front runners, Gifted Master and Home Of The Brave. Will they race alongside each other, setting a slow pace and kick from the turn? If so, they’d have an advantage. Gifted Master didn’t run that well at Ascot, why? So I’ve just saved on Home Of The Brave.

If a fair or better pace then Dutch Connection may be the one. Ran and travelled well at a mile of late; return to 7f and his size/scope may well bring more improvement. Placed in this last year.

Although Birchwood has a good chance on “form”, ridden by Moore and ran well last time… inconsistency and trainer form (and trainer’s Goodwood record) means he’s opposable/layable at current price of around 13/2.

Same (small lay) with Dream Dubai even @ 33/1. Nothing he’s done gives any chance.

    Tupi has lost his form.

Buckstay wouldn’t be out of it if getting the strong pace he needs (invariably held up/dropped out). Hostage to fortune. Worth keeping an eye on in the in-running market if (only if) they go a good/overly fast pace. Likely to be dropped out the back.

I like Markaz @ around 9/1. Could surprise a few if able to put up a similar performance to last time out. Dropped back to 6f, won Chipchase on the all-weather at Newcastle, in good fashion, beating good AW sprinter Pretend. 7f around a speed course could suit. Although did race wide with nothing in front of him (clear view). Unlikely to get that from stall 2 and two Front Runners outside him tomorrow, but at 8 or 9/1 worth taking a chance.

    My 100% book:
Dutch Connection 2/1, Home Of The Brave 9/4, Markaz 7/1, Gifted Master 9/1, Birchwood 11/1, Buckstay 20/1, Tupi 100/1, Dream Dubai 400/1.

    [/quote]

Backed Markaz 9/1, Dutch Connection 5/2 with a saver on Home Of The Brave 5/2

Dutch Connection is a bad’un definitely avoid that. Never finishes his races strongly and quite frankly is a loser. Home of the brave likely to run them ragged.

Home Of The Brave is particularly good when fresh so the gap in between his last race will have given him plenty enough time. I don’t think connections of Dutch Connection really know how to get the best out of him but they could get it right on this course.

James Doyle has been on HOTB 5 times and won 4 with the only defeat coming in the 2000 Guineas. That’s enough for me. If he gets out right and holds his position well then he will be hard to peg back. IF.

James McDonald is on DC and I’ve been impressed with some of his big rides, showing the tactical nous of a top jockey. Maybe that’s what the horse needs so I wouldn’t be ruling him out.

Hughesie will be in mourning. He loved this meeting and this track.

Been very impressed by McDonald. Likes to try and get the best from them without reverting to his stick from what I’ve seen

I was between Dutch Connection and Home Of The Brave in the early betting and went for Home Of The Brave. He’s simply got the better winning record and Dutch Connection has just had too many chances for me and failed.

5/1 seemed the value on the Palmer horse and I think he’ll repel them.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Home Of The Brave’s races have not been in as good company or as competitive races as Dutch Connections. Winning form is not necessarily the best form.

Dutch Connection only just gets a mile, so at that distance he travels well up to a point and then doesn’t find (stay on) as much as true milers. All four races since last year’s Lennox have been at a mile.

In last year’s 7f Lennox, Dutch Connection was one of the first under presure yet stayed on for 2nd.
7f start before the Lennox was when finding plenty to win the Jersey.

It’s possible Home Of The Brave will get the run of the race, if so will certainly be hard to beat.

I like this James McDonald, another very nice ride before he bows out this week.

Same, not just a very good jockey but seems like a nice chap too, humble and down to earth

Very decent young jockey, Im glad for all you who backed Dutch Connection, obviously he was the best form horse in the race byt when you dont like/rate a horse you slate and stay away from them. Hes not one for me.

Horsess make fools of us all. But got to be prepared to re-assess horses after each and every race Gore. Having definite opinions that won’t change whatever the horse does – doesn’t do punters any good. :good:

As I said on my thread over 7f on G/F Dutch Connection was 3 wins from 4 races. All about trip and ground with this horse. He doesn’t quite stay a mile.

On McDonald, I backed Qewy and despite defeat, was impressed again with the ride. Very aware of quickening pace and he rousted the horse along about 4 out to take a better position, before settling again. Just as he launched his challenge the horse couldn’t pick up quickly enough to get through the gap before the horse on the outside hung across and closed it. A shade unlucky and perhaps the best horse on the day.

He seemed as puzzled as the rest of the world when questioned about it
For me Gifted Master was a hindrance to HOTB as the horse took up a bit of energy, more than I had hoped to get past Gifted Master and in turn had less to give when Dutch Connection came along. It wouldn’t have made any difference to the result but definitely didn’t help HOTB imo

I wouldn’t be so sure Nathan.
It could easily have made the difference between winning and losing. Much more room to get a run in a 7f fast pace race than there would’ve been had it been slowly run. Kicking from the front off a slow pace can be a massive advantage, particularly if his main rival (Dutch Connection) is boxed-in at the point where pace/Home Of the Brave quickens. Often, the best horse in the race does not win in slowly run races around Goodwood.

It wasn’t ideal for a trainer to have two runners both of which would’ve had a greater chance able to dictate pace. One On the other hand, with two horses chances added together Palmer had a better chance than had just one turned up.

In contrast to today’s race; had Gifted Master not taken part I would’ve made Home Of The Brave favourite in front of Dutch Connection.

Something else to take notice of is: In my opinion front runners (and all rail runners) have a greater advantage once the false rail is removed (fresh ground on the inner) half-way through this meeting.
