I cannot ever recall a race where some of the jockeys took the wrong course, they all pulled up and then all went back to where the error happened and started the race afresh:
May 19, 2023 at 10:12 #1648318I heard about this elsewhere.
I’ll have to sit down and watch this at some stage.
ADDENDUM: Hadn’t realised it was only 41 seconds so just did.
Bizarre!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"May 19, 2023 at 10:44 #1648325I can’t find a full recording of the race. But some of the horses must have taken the wrong course. Which begs the question: why weren’t they disqualified? Are there different rules in France?
Sean Boyce mentioned in the clip that some French racecourses sound a klaxon to stop a race. But isn’t that unfair on the runners which took the correct course?
Then again, a comment in the twitter thread says some rails which should have guided the way had not been put in place, so maybe it was deemed to be the officials and not the riders at fault.

May 19, 2023 at 13:40 #1648350I watched a cross-country event at Aarau in Switzerland a few years back. Midway through the race there were half a dozen horses left in the contest and four carried taken out by a loose horse at one of the obstacles. The other two riders waited for the four to catch up. There does seem to be a sense of cooperation when the race goes astray in these events.
I would imagine that as long as you retrace and follow the correct course from where you went wrong then you are still part of the race.
