So people can’t go racing, to football, rugby, coffee shops, shopping, theatre, cinema etc etc etc

For two weeks when there isn’t a lot else for them to do ? Not everyone can or god forbid, would want to spend two weeks playing train sets with a horrible screaming kid

There would be a huge spike in child murders

People can take their own decisions and many will Moe but to shut down those activities to protect delivery drivers and train drivers ?

I think delivery drivers and train drivers are more important than people who want to go to football matches and racing. It isn’t as if racing has been banned totally as it was last year. That was awful. Anyway, football matches are being cancelled, probably because so many footballers seem to be loathe to have the vaccine. As for child murders. A bit of an insensitive comment, that but I think government cutbacks on social care have also contributed to the latest tragic cases. And, yet again, you are someone speaking from the position of someone having a degree of immunity because you have had covid. Many of us are scared of catching it because we don’t know if we’ll be one of those people that have a terrible reaction to it. Maybe, if my judgement is clouded by not having had it, yours might be because you’ve survived it.

I’ll leave others to comment about the suggestion for us all being locked down to save train drivers from getting covid

Gritting lorries have just gone past. What would happen if the drivers are all off sick? Anyways, if people are going to pubs it isn’t a lockdown. A lockdown was when we could only leave the house for one hour a day. Got some good films to watch, though, so I’m happy enough!

…And you’re somehow proud of doing all that.

What a selfish idiot you are Ricky boy.

How many have you had tonight?

I don’t expect you realise that if those landlords knew about how you’re acting without care… They’d tell you to “feck off” too.

If you get covid again and die, it better be quick because you are long odds on a Super Spreader – hope you die before infecting anyone. :negative:

It isn’t very nice, but GT is seldom as blunt as that and I think he wrote it to illustrate a point.

I don’t want any more constraints on my personal freedom, but I do see both sides.

When you’re in government or advising government, worst-case scenario has to be your bar for maximising safety.

They face later public inquiry and even possible manslaughter charges if they don’t.

If the NHS is overwhelmed to the extent of even a single life-long tax and NI payer being denied treatment which would have saved their life that is a watershed moment for our society.

It’s too big a decision for government to make tbh.

Maybe we need a referendum on whether we now just let Covid rip, suck it up and just treat people first come first served.

The consequences of what many here want are huge and alter the society we live in.

Maybe it is the majority view – but we can’t demand that yet hold politicians responsible if the bodies pile up.

    Referendum time.

“The consequences of what many here want are huge and alter the society we live in.”

The consequences are huge on the pro-lockdown, Zero Covid side. Because it seems some people here will not be satisfied until there is Zero Covid. Which, in my view, is either unattainable or only achievable at a cost which is not worth paying.

Leo Varadkar made some revealing comments earlier this week. He said the future was one of lockdowns and vaccines with occasional breaks of freedom. He also said he is prepared to do whatever it takes to defeat Covid.

Whatever it takes? That is the language of a dangerous fanatic. Does he have no concern for the damage that will be done to society, physical and mental health, education and culture – before we even mention the economy? Only someone on a guaranteed income from the state and with a nice pension lined up could make such a statement.

And do we really want to live in a world where public health policy dominates every aspect of life and where we have annual lockdowns, before we are allowed to live freely for a few months (but only if technocrats like Varadkar decide it is safe and we have been good enough)? That is a bleak vision of the future. And our freedom is not his or any other politician’s to take away.

There is more to life than avoiding illness and trying to cheat death (which we can’t anyway). I get the impression that more people are getting sick and tired of this. We have to learn to live with the virus. That does mean some people, mostly old and already unwell, will die from Covid every winter. Just like they have died from respiratory viruses every winter before.

Sorry if that upsets anyone but I can’t help feeling that our ancestors, who were far wiser than we give them credit for, had a more realistic, stoical and grown up attitude to pain, sickness and death.

CAS, would you like to see a referendum to resolve this one way or the other once and for all?

    Ditto Ricky, ditto everyone.

Would you like to be able to vote on it and then, in a moral sense, then take personal responsibility for what then happens?

‘Sorry if that upsets anyone but I can’t help feeling that our ancestors, who were far wiser than we give them credit for, had a more realistic, stoical and grown up attitude to pain, sickness and death.’

It’s a fair point, advances in modern medicine have kept people alive far longer than they otherwise would have been previously and probably changed expectations somewhat. The state pension was after all brought in to give you a bit of time and money to tie up your affairs for a year or two. Now people are routinely claiming it for 20 to 30 years.

Back to lockdowns, it’s a difficult balancing act. Frankly we need more people like Moehat here who voluntarily shields herself (I think Moe is a she, sorry if not) which I think would allow the rest of us a bit more normality. It’s not illegal to shield yourself if there’s no lockdown, it is illegal to carry on as normal if there is one. Good on you Moe, I really appreciate that it can’t be easy and I hope you get back to doing things the things you love more easily soon with less worry.

I’ve done a few things people would consider high risk like taking plenty of flights or going to packed bars. I still to my knowledge haven’t caught it but I can take that risk as I’m young and vaccinated. Should I and millions of others who’ve done the same be stopped becuase of the vulnerable people? As Cork says, if we wait until it’s safe for everyone we’ll be here forever. I don’t mean this to sound like a selfish ‘shut yourself away old folk so I can do what I want’ post but we have to start somewhere and if the vulnerable protect themselves as our friend Moe does, at least some of us can get back to something like normal. That way the economy will still be there for everyone else when it’s their turn.

I probably left something out or worded it wrongly but I have to work now.

Shocking stuff from Gingerarse there. He always acts like covid is a death sentence and not the heavy cold it seems to be for most.
This is a horrible forum to be on at the moment, partly due to only selective moderation

Confirmed officially today that omnicrom is milder

Of course it ******* is. We’ve known that for weeks. As if the South African experts in the front line know less than some weirdo with a spreadsheet

The bbc desperately trying to play it down this morning and the guardian will be livid

Viruses have traditionally become much milder as they continue to mutate. There was a good explanation of this somewhere which I may link but it was the case with the huge flu outbreaks in the past each and every time

Richard. Plumpton members room is the perfect example. Some there have been claiming state pension since the war

Pensions is a very important issue which I believe will become even more pertinent in future.

As Richard said, the original intention was to allow you just a few years to sort your affairs out and put your feet up before you died.

My grandmother claimed the state pension for 32 years and she was by no means unusual. As even more people start living longer, it is going to place a huge burden on the working population. Who might feel rather resentful if they are denied many of the opportunities their parents and grandparents had.

Richard’s other point about trusting people to take responsibility is a good one too. We have been treated like children who cannot be trusted throughout this crisis. When in fact lots of people were changing their behaviour before heavy handed lockdowns were imposed.

It is not good for civic society if the government appears to distrust its own people.
