Does anyone know the outcome of the stewards’ enquiry in to the running of Alan Swinbank’s Last of The Bunch in the 2.15 at Catterick? The Racing Post’s live reporter passed comment on its delay prior to the 3.20, but made no mention of it subsequently.
Having drifted out to 14/1 from an early 8/1, Last of The Bunch was allowed to lose its position early in the race with absolutely no counteraction from jockey Denis O’Regan. Dropped to last and seemingly going nowhere (still under no pressure whatsoever), Last of The Bunch suddenly made rapid headway approaching the home straight to sit two lengths behind the eventual ruuner-up with (seemingly) plenty left in the tank. From the second last O’Regan barely bothered to ride out hands and heels, let alone reach for the whip, and unsurprisingly failed to overhaul 33/1 chance Shayaza for second.
There have been times when I have been less than impressed with rides given to Swinbank runners, but the running of Last of The Bunch was questionable to say the least.
December 2, 2009 at 16:53 #261821Last Of The Bunch, successful once from four tries in bumpers, gave the distinct impression she could have got second had her rider been more vigorous. The stewards held an enquiry into her running and riding, but took no action having noted Denis O’Regan’s explanation that the mare lost her confidence having jumped green and ran wide at the bends

Last of The Bunch lost her confidence, suddenly regained it, and then lost it again, all in the space of just a few minutes?
Moody cow, isn’t she?
Thanks for your response, berminn, even if its contents were depressingly predictable.
December 2, 2009 at 17:04 #261827Swinbank learnt a lesson from his last convicted non trier at the track. Put a pro jock up and do the job properly.
Depressingly predictable sums it up.

I wonder if Silvoir might be able to comment on the likelihood of this particular ‘incident’ being looked at in greater detail at some point in the near future (especially in light of the information provided by Cav in the ‘Market Guide or Form Book’ thread)?
December 3, 2009 at 11:58 #261907For info, here’s the Stewards’ enquiry notice.
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of LAST OF THE BUNCH, ridden by D. O’Regan and trained by G.A. Swinbank, which finished third, beaten approximately eight and a half lengths. They interviewed the Rider and Trainer. The Rider stated that his instructions were to ride the filly positively in a handy position but to give her plenty of light as this was her first run over hurdles. He added, the filly jumped green early on, lost her confidence, and as a result lost ground in the back straight. And although she travelled well on the flat coming out of the back straight the leaders had kicked for home and she could not make up the lost ground. The Trainer confirmed these instructions. However, he remarked that she had lost ground on the home bend but acknowledged that she had ran green and jumped poorly throughout, although she had been well schooled at home. Having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards noted these explanations and took no further action.
December 3, 2009 at 12:22 #261916Thank you, Paul. I beg to differ with the stewards that the filly was ridden to obtain best possible placing.
December 3, 2009 at 12:31 #261918I didn’t pay particular attention to her jumping during the race but there was no way she would have picked the front two up in the straight.
I know it goes on but horses aren’t the complete package straight away and they need to learn. If backing a first-timer over hurdles you’re taking a risk.
There may well be a gamble next time out and why not cos she’ll have learned from the experience.

Was this matter reported to the BHA’s Disciplinary Department? What were their findings (if any)?
December 14, 2009 at 21:40 #263875On a similar matter, did anyone look into the running of Daaloob at Ludlow last Thursday.
Second in two bumpers, it appeared to have some sort of chance and indeed someone was ramping it on the BF forum the previous evening. Absolutely toxic in the ring, drifting from about 6 to 14 or more, it was beaten after 100 yards. It doesn’t look good.
December 15, 2009 at 18:14 #263992The fact that Daaloob was running in a claimer, given his level of ability in bumpers, would surely have set a few alarm bells ringing though. In that instance.
