Bobby, if Willo Court wasn’t in this I’d happily chance Western Miller to beat Yanworth. He’ll be sharp fit and, as you say, is in great heart.

But I think WC is flush with talent :) and can go right to the top so am sticking with him.

    Good luck all

    Good shout Ham

I might join you on WC as I too doubt yanworth will run

I have indeed hopped on the WC train.

I just really don’t rate Yanworth at all.

9/4 WC is a fantastic price in my opinion

That’s a good winner there. Bit annoyed I didn’t just have a good bet on him but no harm done to my wallet. Hopefully Alan King will now run Yanworth over 3 miles. Maybe in the Kauto Star. Willoughby looks a proper top level Chaser to me.

If Unowhatimeanharry wasn’t around, Yanworth would be back over hurdles. Kingy’s horse isn’t as big as the winner and doubt he’s going to be as good over fences.

IF Yanworth is kept over fences then he should be stepped up in trip.

    Boom!

I’d step him up to the RSA. Was very confident all the way round as he travelled nicely.

Yanworth can’t jump. Don’t rate the horse but I’d put him back over hurdles.

If Yanworth can’t jump how has he finished 3 lengths behind a horse that’s impressed you ?

A couple of minor errors but he’s not as quick as people believed. He didn’t jump as badly as suggested.

Think WC had more in the tank. Yanworth is undoubtedly quick between fences. Think WC will be better over further. Yanworth made more than two minor errors.

I got an overriding feeling that Yanworth is not a natural chaser, even when he met one on a stride he didn’t seem to carry the momentum with him on landing and getting away from the fence.

When he is short he doesn’t seem to be able to organise himself as quickly at this stage of his developement – might take him a while longer to get it as to me he never seemed to have much respect for his hurdles either.

That being said, it just goes to show how talented he is to still get himself into a challenging position at the last but I don’t think it matters whether it is 2m4f or 3m, if he doesn’t iron out those jumping issue he is going to find it hard to replicate his hurdles success.

    Work in progress.

I would be very interested to know Joe’s view on Yanworth because for me he spent too much time in the air and was slow away from almost every fence!

Me too. I thought he looked ill at ease rather than novicey. Does he just not like fences or are his joints bothering him? Or something else? Even on the run in he didn’t look completely comfortable.
    What’s the verdict Joe?

Ei ei boys – feels like a bit of a TRF communal winner. Willoughby Court could be a ‘forum horse’ this year.

Really would fear for Yanworth’s career at this point. He has run really considering the mistakes but, given his history of physical problems, you’ve got to worry about the awkward shapes he is making.

There’s nothing wrong with Yanworth’s technique or flexibility. He has all he needs technically to be regarded as a good jumper. But he has other problems, the same ones which affected him last season. Yanworth never puts it all in, even when winning, and that says a lot about the size of his engine. I suspect his temperament has a fair bit to do with it but his galloping demeanour suggests something might be bothering him and he could have a breathing issue.

He’s most unusual in that he often runs in very short snatches. Most horses who run in snatches will do so for long enough for it easily to be picked up. But Yanworth will sometimes do it for a dozen strides on the bit and then drop back off it…he can do this regularly in a race.

After his fencing errors, watch as Geraghty tries to make sure he doesn’t lose too much ground; Yanworth will stretch his neck, carrying it very low (indication to me of a possible undiagnosed breathing issue) until he’s back on an even keel then he’ll begin the snatch stuff again, often hanging slightly as his head goes to the right.

He must have some engine because the way he cleared the last today suggested he had quite a bit in the tank. Geraghty was arguably a shade unlucky because Yanworth was picking up and gaining momentum at that point and had it been a straight run to the line he’d have gone very close and might have won.

But Geraghty had to haul him to the right (as is necessary at Newbury) and he resented that and sulked for a few strides. The jock made it worse (although I doubt he had an option) by hitting him. That was the last straw for Yanworth and he refused yet again to put it all in.

He’s well worth a try in blinkers.

I should have added that it’s very likely that the cause of his errors is that snatchy running and hanging. I think rhythm is one of the most underestimated factors in racing – it’s important even on the flat – much more so over hurdles, but with fences I’d say it often makes the difference between winning and losing. And the longer the race the more it matters.
