About 2 months ago I posted a sire I thought would be influential in the NH breeding – Montmartre. I am now kicking myself I did not catch onto Labaik at 25-1 in the first at Cheltenham today.
March 14, 2017 at 22:35 #1292105Jamie Codd tipped it in a really strong manner in a Cheltenham preview and was laughed at by the others.
March 15, 2017 at 10:52 #1292239Thats interesting Kenh, I expect their not laughing now. I saw Montmartre when he first stood as a stallion in France abut 4 years ago, one of the most athletic impressive horses I have seen, they went and brought him in from the field for us to see. Todays bumper has a horse by Balko (Bakmaj), another sire I rate.

it’s worth a listen of you haven’t heard this. check out approximately 1:26:00 to 1:30:00
http://cheltenham1.attheraces.com/cheltenham-preview-nightMarch 15, 2017 at 11:39 #1292250I’ve never laughed so much watching a preview night but thankfully made a note of what Jamie said as I love that kind of horse as I think that, if they do start they have the sense to come home as fast as possible so they can get back to their box! Unfortunately lightning didn’t strike twice and Wicklow Brave ran to type. I wonder if Choisir [dam side] gave Labaik that burst of speed that he showed at the end of the race; I think Choisir is the sire of one runner today but the name escapes me.
March 23, 2017 at 20:23 #1293898I cannot remember where I heard it but it was at Cheltenham after his win which was impressive, however Gordon Elliott apparently stated that the reason he believed the horse started was because in the UK the starters assisitant cracks a whip which made him start where as in Ireland they are not allowed to crack a whip and in fact I have never seen anyone with one in Ireland.
Interesting because they are talking about Fairyhouse and Punchestown but with that in the back of my mind I would be tempted to back against him.April 25, 2017 at 21:41 #1298294I did warn you all about this horse and so it proved.

in the donkey derby?
April 25, 2017 at 22:28 #1298302This horse clearly does not want to race and therefore the authorities should be able to order him to be retired
April 25, 2017 at 23:29 #1298309Down to run Friday now
Down to refuse to run on Friday now.
He is on the way to becoming the Irish equivalent of Nigel Twiston Davies’ Mad Moose who refused 4 times in his last 10 runs over jumps was then switched to the flat and after a promissing first two runs then refused again. I believe he was banned after thatApril 26, 2017 at 00:14 #1298319I cannot remember where I heard it but it was at Cheltenham after his win which was impressive, however Gordon Elliott apparently stated that the reason he believed the horse started was because in the UK the starters assisitant cracks a whip which made him start where as in Ireland they are not allowed to crack a whip and in fact I have never seen anyone with one in Ireland.

Other’s claimed that the noise was 105 year old Mary’s arm snapping in half. Whatever the truth, the horse started and the incident will rest in legend as the “Great British Labaik Off”
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 26, 2017 at 09:35 #1298334Donkey Derby odds
Bets only stand if both horses start the race
Labaik 1/1,000,000,000,000,000.00
Mad Moose 2,000,000,000,000/1Blackbeard to conquer the World
April 26, 2017 at 10:16 #1298339Another rule is probably needed to see horses like Labaik retired. In the last two non-starts the jock has simply waited long enough for the horse to set off into some kind of canter. That sees him counted as starting thus avoiding a ban.
Perhaps they should have to be moving forward in a gallop no more than fifty yards behind the last runner who has set off at flagfall.
April 26, 2017 at 11:07 #1298352From the other Labaik thread:
A horse refusing to race, whether for the first time or a repeat offender, is far from uncommon and all instances should be treated the same (whatever its price or the profile of the race). The horse is under orders but does not (or, as today, effectively does not) take meaningful part. Racing’s rules do not allow for a Rule 4 deduction but the customer has not received what has been paid for. Bookies who refund stakes should be commended and their action will be more to their advantage than disadvantage in the long run.
It would be better if jockeys accepted the situation and did not bother to start, if the horse finally consents to do so, when they are left as many lengths behind as Labaik today. Like, for example, Mad Moose there should a limit upon the number of times a horse can refuse to race before it is banned and this limit should be coordinated and cumulative across countries for it is tricky to bet in and to set a market in races containing a serial refuser. (GM)
As to yesterday’s situation, Jack Kennedy had to get Labaik moving and complete the course because the horse is one refusal away from being banned by the Irish Turf Club. Although he effectively did refuse yesterday, it still technically counts as a start because he got moving in the end. (LS)
Continuing the two wrongs theme, the technicalities of the rules are ridiculous (what a surprise!) allowing the intent of the rule to be circumvented to nobody’s advantage except the connections. If it were not for this subversion the horse would have been banned after his antics at Naas and not been able to scoop a big pot at Cheltenham! (GM)
April 28, 2017 at 01:22 #1298578Justice probably served to Ruby to get taken on by Russell and done by the second string after how he played the start, I thought Labaik looked a lot better than 50/50 to jump initially on the first walk in…
He has 8lbs to find with the top rated based on OR’s on Friday which doesn’t completely rule him out if he can show some improvement, an interesting turn if he was to take the €147.5k prize money for Elliott in the title race at this stage with the difference €129.4k before Fridays racing
