Not saying for a minute he would have won today but Frankie was stopped in his tracks at a crucial stage and had to switch losing precious momentum…..Nicconi is much better than we saw today and is a must for the notebook.
He could be if he’s not retired immediately.
In all seriousness, I can’t work out what Dettori was aiming to do with Nicconi. I thought he would have been held up with the aim to sweep down the middle of the track, not diving up near the stands rail where you’re more likely to hit traffic.
June 16, 2010 at 00:40 #300999That was a truly solid gallop and Nicconi was flat throughout. For a sprinter it is quite alarming.
On viewing this he is more one-dimensional than past King’s Stand winners from Australia, and could be suited better to a mile. Indeed, his half-brother won Group 1 races from 1600m-2000m.
A positive would be to use this run as a learning brief, head home and focus on the plethora of Group 1 7 furlong-mile races and perhaps a tilt at the Cox Plate.
June 21, 2010 at 11:39 #302418Well the original plan was to retire him after this race, win, lose or draw. However, Hayes is contemplating a start in the July Cup, which wont suit him at all.
He isnt a cox plate horse. He is a sprinter, nothing else. Niconero was a very good horse during the latter stages of his career. 1000/1200m a dry track, long straight, a clear run and Nicconi is near unbeatable. This run doesnt justify how good he is/was.
In terms of comparison to our other aussie champions (I am Australian) Takeover Target clearly is the best we have sent over to the UK. He was tough and fought it out very hard. The other winners were placed to perfection and were at the peak of their powers (Choisir, Miss Andretti and Scenic Blast)
