Funny ; I have a similar view about Johnson too.
February 12, 2013 at 16:01 #429400I don’t know where to find the stats that compare this season to this date compared to previous seasons to this date, but id’ be suprised if it didn’t lag somewhat.
His % is roughly the same, however he projects to have the least amount of total runs for a good 5/6 years. His total prize money is lagging severely behind his best seasons, and even with the big money festivals looming, doesn’t project to have many hopes in these races.
Not had a bumper winner this season. Has poor crop of juveniles by his standard. No Novice Hurdlers with festival pretensions (Though i do like Two Rockers for the future). Poor crop of Novice chasers (Only notables Salden Licht, now retired, and GodsmeJudge).
Meanwhile, Invictus, Medermit, Grumeti, Batonnier, Montbazon look likely to miss the entire season.
So the strike rate is similar (Though it feels like much of that is down to a quick start) but the numbers and quality seem down drastically, with no obvious Cheltenham contenders.
Edit : And sadly what i imagine would be one of/if not his bets bumper horses broke down in an horrendous accident when clear at Lingfield this afternoon. Very sad ; looked a promising horse.
February 13, 2013 at 10:22 #429485Very bad luck indeed for the yard, Grumeti will miss The Champion Hurdle.
February 18, 2013 at 14:33 #429966I’ve always felt Alan King was the most honest trainer from the more high profile yards.
Henderson frequently puts punters away from his horses and Nicholls I recall saying "Poungach could be anything". When?
Entries and potential comments I have heard from King invariably tend to be correct. Grumeti last year, McVicar this and his horse to watch for on Weekenders stable tour was Two Rockers which won last weekend on its first outing after his feedback.
Maybe his honesty in giving the correct information out there effects him getting a lot more owners who need a touch off the radar at a big price?

Bensalem
to the ever-growing list of injured horses at the King yard. He misses Cheltenham due to a suspensory injury.

I think I would agree with most of that.
Sad to say but money does sometimes talk and generally paying between 10,000-30,000 for stores isn’t going to compete with the likes of O’Neill, Henderson, Nicholls and most recently Pipe. Recent big spending has really put Pipe right back on the map. Interestingly, two of King’s most expensive horses are Invictus and Two Rockers. Shame that Two Rockers didn’t have an Albert Bartlett entry but if he goes he could still surprise a few in the Neptune.

Yeah. Who’d have thought that a horse which has won a point and twice won over 21 furlongs in the mud at Towcester might stay three miles.
February 28, 2013 at 22:15 #430829have a closer look at the King stats on RP…
look at his horses for 2012-13 season, look at the horses who’ve won over 5 figures. Choc has won on L’Unique, the other 8 have all won the dough with WH on board.
What does that tell us? The strike rate and money/rides ratio points glaringly to WH being superior.
i always liked Choc but the past couple of years I avoid him like the plague.
March 6, 2013 at 09:49 #431466Choc Thornton has been ruled out of Cheltenham through injury. That’ll be good news to some posters in this thread.
