I honestly think we,be seen the best of him , let’s be honest scu will have schooled him to hell yet his jumping hasn’t improved , lucinda,s horses are normally sound jumpers , it’s something the yard is good at …. If you miss one fence in the KG your toast
December 18, 2022 at 07:41 #1627198It will be a great call from Joe at no doubt long odds if Ahoy Senor goes on to win a King George or a Cheltenham Gold Cup but, as previously stated, I think he lacks scope.
He had done incredibly well to win a Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle and a Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase and I think he merited an OR of 161 on the back of that.
But while he certainly seems to like Liverpool – and flat left-handed tracks generally – I too honestly think that’s as good as he is.
If he could win a Handicap Chase – like the Rowland Meyrick – off 161 I’d be surprised and if he ran in the King George and finished in the first four I’d be even more surprised.

December 18, 2022 at 10:35 #1627215Snow showers at Kempton and 18mm rain forecast the next 24 hours.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 18, 2022 at 21:43 #1627314I’ve had a go on Millers Bank. I know he was beaten by Pic D’orhy the other week but it wasn’t the greatest ride ever on the day, and at 50’s given the fact the race is likely to drop a few runners between now and Boxing Day I’m happy to take a punt.
There’s just something about him that makes me think the track will suit and he has a turn of foot even at the end of his races which is something that holds you in good stead for a King George.
He’s probably short of the class required to win but bar the front 2 in the market and when you consider Frodon is less than half the price, 50’s seems over priced in a race which lacks depth. And has done for a few years now overall.

There are already two big 3-milers in Ireland, the Hennessy and Punchestown

Tbh, the John Durkan doesn’t help either.
Back in the day, they’d all have to go to Kempton and there was no Betfair Chase either so it was the first chance for UK top-class 3m chasers to contest a Grade 1.
There are far too many pattern Chases either side of the Irish Sea.

It needs to be a little earlier in the calender
To allow horses to run there and in the King George or Savills with a long enough gap
Had the durkan been a week or two earlier allaho would very likely gave run in the King George last year
And galopin may have run in one of them this year
Mid to end of November would be ideal
It’s the same with the ascot chase/reynoldstown meeting being slightly too close to Cheltenham
December 20, 2022 at 22:57 #1627598A final thought this evening on todays confirmation declaration – and scratching! – stage.
Chezza’s seriously considering buying a pie shop just so he can ban Dan Skelton from it.
Yeah, let’s swerve Bravemansgame at a Kempton to focus on taking on a chaser who’s probably a stone better than him in March, if we get the ground, and if the horse is still sound then.
Go figure.

“The reason for not going for the King George is that I don’t want to run him right-handed which isn’t necessarily in his favour, get beat, then get left with a rebuilding task on your hands to get him in shape for the Gold Cup.
To win a Gold Cup I think you have got to have a very smooth preparation and I can just see a King George being an unsmooth preparation.
The reason I entered him is because I thought that if they suddenly rearranged for Cheltenham on New Year’s Day given all the weather we’ve been having then I would want to be in it.
I think we will try a King George one day for sure, but I don’t want to do that at the moment as I think there is a smoother route for this horse to take.”So he may run him in the King George one day when the horse is an old rogue ;o)
December 21, 2022 at 05:15 #1627625Skeltons horse is prob missing the gear you need to win a KG ….. It suits a Ryanair horse more , Frodon being a good example , trial then GC is the right course for him
December 21, 2022 at 19:57 #1627739“my reading between the lines concludes that if the ground is decent, Ahoy Senor will be at Kempton.”
Looks like Steeplechasing has called it right – if he’s had a bet, it looks like he’s on a runner.

Apart from Edredon Bleu and arguably (he’s won at 3m1f!) Frodon, can anyone name any other 2m4f chasers who won the King George?
Because all I can remember is horses that stayed very inch of 3m on a park course winning it, dating right back to Gay Spartan.
3m is 3m and I think it’s an utter myth short runners do well in the race.
Vautour got nailed on the line, Anaglogs Daughter didn’t stay – you want a proper 3m chaser for the race.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 21, 2022 at 20:36 #1627743A well run King George on softish ground is arguably more taxing than your average Gold Cup.There are several points at Cheltenham to get a breather in. Pillar to post at Kempton, bar some small relief on the bends, they struggle to fill up. It can be brutal. In 2012 Long Run was still just 7 and was all out to win in heavy ground, off just a reasonable pace. He never ran to that mark again, and won just once, at Kelso.
December 21, 2022 at 20:57 #1627746Winners since 1971: The Dikler, Pendil(x2), Captain Christy(x2), Royal Marshall II, Bachelor’s Hall, Gay Spartan, Silver Buck(x2), Wayward Lad(x3), Burrough Hill Lad, Desert Orchid(x4), Nupsala, The Fellow(x2), Barton Bank, Algan, One Man(x2), See More Business(x2), Teeton Mill, First Gold, Florida Pearl, Best Mate, Edredon Bleu, Kicking King(x2), Kauto Star(x5) Long Run(x2), Silviniaco Conti(x2), Cue Card, Thistlecrack, Might Bite, Clan Des Obeaux(x2), Frodon, Tornado Flyer.
I’m not seeing too many short runners in among that lot – and I am seeing numerous Cheltenham Gold Cup winners and even a Welsh National winner.
Some might say Pendil was all speed, but he almost won a Cheltenham Gold Cup!
Ditto Wayward Lad!
Both stayed 3m on a park course thoroughly.
“But what about flying greys One Man and Desert Orchid, Chezza?”
Err, one won a HENNESSY, the other won a Cheltenham Gold Cup, a Whitbread and an Irish National.
As did Bachelors Hall.

I’d been wondering for a while about headgear with him, and am happy to hear he’ll work tomorrow wearing cheekpieces with a view to doing the same on Monday. If he gets full benefit from them and they help blot out distractions at fences, you should see the full capabilities of the horse.
