I’ve watched it a few times , Shoemark says he is not overly happy with his ride , maybe he’s being diplomatic who knows knowing Gosden may not be happy but Iam not seeing that bad a ride , I see FOG being bit slow to quicken even when given the go . He wasn’t beaten a nose , was decent half length .Shoemark kept horse nice and balanced down hill and got on tail of the danger . I think it’s a bit harsh on Shoemark imho . Happens daily horse flashing home once he gets going and not getting there . Should he have got up FOG at the 3 pole ???
May 5, 2025 at 11:41 #1729534No, but needed to just give him something, anything to keep him awake and get him ready to go
The horse probably thought he wasn’t in a race with how relaxed Shoemark was on him. You can’t as a jockey be thinking a horse is going to pick up straight away all the time. He put him on the back foot.
Happens daily but this is the Guineas a group 1 on the best horse. Look at Canford Cliffs against Goldikova in the Queen Anne, Richard Hughes is anticipating, sharp minded and not wanting to give her any rope when they kick, keeping the revves up so the horse is ready.
Shoemark just expects his horse to go from traveling to going through the gears in an instant. It was a slow pace and coming from behind as wellCharles Darwin to conquer the World
May 7, 2025 at 11:35 #1729648Kieran Shoemark has lost the job as stable jockey to the Gosdens. He will still ride for them but they will use the best available jockey in the top races.

It is unfortunate. I think he gained a lot of respect for holding up his hands and admitting he made a mistake on Saturday. However, it is a results business and I doubt Juddmonte was satisfied. Gosden senior clearly did not look pleased either.
I think the fault is more with Gosden than the jockey. No disrespect to Shoemark but he should never have been appointed to the role.
May 7, 2025 at 11:45 #1729649Poor timing when the jockey has been riding very well this season. How was he know that FOG wouldn’t handle the Newmarket dip as well on the faster ground last weekend?
May 7, 2025 at 11:49 #1729650It is another triumph for ITV Racing.
Told us Oisin Murphy did nothing wrong at Newcastle. Two hours later he is on social media admitting he should have won.
Told us Kieran Shoemark did nothing wrong at Newmarket. Five days later he is in effect sacked.
Will any of these pundits now admit they were wrong, or that they lacked the guts to say what plenty of people on social media could see? Or will they tell John and Thady Gosden to their faces that they are wrong? Shoemark’s biggest cheerleader Matt Chapman being a case in point.
Don’t hold your breath..
May 7, 2025 at 11:52 #1729651FOG connections can change the jockey if they want but for Gosden to drop him as his stable jockey after that ride, and I’ve seen worse, poor decision if I’ve undertood it right and he’s not stable jockey any more.
May 7, 2025 at 11:52 #1729652“Poor timing when the jockey has been riding very well this season”.
We don’t know what has been said behind closed doors. Juddmonte do not look to have been enthusiastic about Shoemark. Ryan Moore rode Laurel at Royal Ascot for Gosden/Juddmonte last season despite Shoemark being available. Maybe Juddmonte has made it clear they no longer want Shoemark to ride?
Given lots of Gosden’s other owners have retained jockeys, was Shoemark’s position now simply untenable?
May 7, 2025 at 11:53 #1729653Zilzal, maybe by not hesitating off a slow pace when your rivals are kicking for home. If that was Jamie Spencer on Field of Gold we’d be on 20 pages now
Billy Loughnane and Rossa Ryan would be the two to look at for meCharles Darwin to conquer the World
May 7, 2025 at 11:55 #1729654Ryan has ridden an Arc winner for Juddmonte. Perhaps they are looking to put him under contract? He would still retain the link with Beckett.
May 7, 2025 at 12:50 #1729666zilzal, very few horses would handle the dip in the manner Field Of Gold was asked. William Buick gradually built momentum towards it whereas Shoemark went from holding the horse to an all out drive in a couple of seconds. He unbalanced the horse.
I think this is the correct decision as it’s just been one bad ride too many in the high profile races. Flat racing is big business with huge amounts of money on the line. I’m honestly surprised he’s lasted as long as he has but that’s probably due to a very subpar pool of jockeys to choose from currently.
I’d look for someone approaching their mid 30s as that appears to be when most flat jockeys begin hitting their peak. Most of the younger jockeys are just too error prone or over confident.
May 7, 2025 at 12:59 #1729668There aren’t really all that many top class jockeys to go round though, are there?
May 7, 2025 at 13:29 #1729674That’s the issue moehat. Moore stands alone then you have Buick and a gap to the rest. Doyle was getting a good few rides for Gosden a couple of years back and wasn’t too impressive either.
It’ll be far from ideal if they end up having different jockeys riding their top horses every race.
Could they get Murphy? I don’t rate him near as highly as some but he’d surely be a big upgrade on Shoemark.
May 7, 2025 at 13:49 #1729678I am not sure they would want to go anywhere near Murphy at the moment. But we are not allowed to say why..
May 7, 2025 at 14:37 #1729686It reminds me of when Sam TD started riding for Paul Nicholls. I’m sure he’s far happier now.
May 7, 2025 at 15:41 #1729693And Daryl Jacob as well. He was on a loser from the start, taking over from Walsh. It was similar for Shoemark taking over from Dettori (as I said much earlier in the thread).
He may be happier out of it, away from the scrutiny and pressure. I am sure trainers will still want him to ride for them.
May 7, 2025 at 15:42 #1729694Unfortunate but not entirely that surprising – had he not had the difficult start last season as the stable jockey he might have been given a bit more grace for this error but as many have said it is a results business and at the top level you have to be ‘on it’ because minor misjudgements are more often than not the difference between winning and losing because the margins you are playing with at the highest level are so small.
I think while it was brave to admit to his overconfidence in the ride he gave Field of Gold, it probably hasn’t help his cause with the Gosdens/Juddmonte and it may have ended up playing a big part in fast tracking this decision through.
To me the true mark of the great jockeys are their ability to limit the mistakes they make in the big races and that is why Moore stands head and shoulders above his contemporaries, in comparison he very rarely is in the wrong position tactically or gets caught out by pace and when things haven’t gone to plan he is more than able to trust in his judgement and react to things on the fly.
There are a number of jockeys that can ride good races here and there but most struggle with being able to do it consistently race in race out, as great as even Dettori is, he has had several of those moments with the Gosden as well (a few on Stradivarius spring instantly to mind).
All Kieran can really do now is keep his head down and try to eliminate whereever possible these types of incidents and hopefully he can regain the Gosdens/Juddmonte’s trust back.
Will be interesting to see exactly what jockey’s are available for Field of Gold at Royal Ascot as most of the usual suspects will likely be claimed to ride something else. Juddmonte may look to Colin Keane who rides their horses for Ger Lyons
May 7, 2025 at 15:54 #1729696Ideally Juddmonte would like Moore but he will obviously be claimed by O’Brien.
I think they will use Rossa Ryan if he is available.
