If thats not an extremely pleasing reappearance I don’t know what is! Was willing him on to win, but really happy to see some of the old Kicking King sparkle.
January 24, 2008 at 14:27 #137440He did that really well. Surely would have won if it hadnt been for the blunder 3 out?
Great to see him back. Another run before GC i presume?
January 24, 2008 at 14:29 #137441Apart from nearly destroying the 2nd last I was very pleased with Kicking King’s return. Considering the injury he had and the long layoff it was a good show.
January 24, 2008 at 14:33 #137442what a good performance , very pleased for all connections, would like to see one more run before cheltenham.
January 24, 2008 at 15:40 #137446Well done KK , lovely to see him do so well , hope he comes out of the race ok and sound
January 24, 2008 at 16:12 #137449It’s great to see him back, and a fine performance today. Fingers crossed that he’ll be fine coming out of that and take his chance at Cheltenham.
As for next race, Tom Taafe has said that the Hennessey is a possibility, but is probably a bit too close. I’d love him to be entered though, it would be very interesting to see how he’d be priced up. Most likely next run however is the Red Mills chase.
January 24, 2008 at 16:22 #137451He ran really well didn’t he?! He can only improve
January 24, 2008 at 16:51 #137455What a shite ride on the winner by Walsh. That’s how to make a relatively easy task look far harder than it should be.
January 24, 2008 at 19:36 #137487Just got back from there- a great day’s racing for €20!
Tom Taaffe will be rightly delighted with the King as long as he’s sound in the morning. Agree that Ruby should have had the race won at the last on Nickname but a top comeback nonetheless.
Just to be a bit cautious, I remember a few horses coming back from tendons (looks Like Trouble for one) who ran almost up to their previous form first time up then failed to reproduce it afterwards. I would bet against KK being able to better this run in 2 more outings this season but I’d love to be wrong.January 24, 2008 at 19:44 #137489Fantastic to see Kicking King back on the racetrack and what a performance.
Brilliant stuff from horse and trainer.
January 24, 2008 at 19:48 #137491I take it Ruby didn’t set out to make all, dj, as should be the case with Nickname on that sort of ground?

SHL
January 24, 2008 at 20:12 #137504Dead right SHL.He won well at Navan in his comeback run in 2000 and failed to build on that subsequently.
January 24, 2008 at 20:14 #137506The last twice Nickname has tried to make all he got beat, once at Evens and once at 6/4.
Since then he has been held up off the pace to great affect, winning six of his eight races.
Ruby did absolutely nothing wrong today in my opinion, he sat a few lengths behind the other two and seemingly travelled well until about three or four out. The horse had to be hard ridden to win, but the horse DID win – I find it hard to be critical of the jockey or suggest he should have done anything different. But then again, it’s all about opinions isn’t it.
Mike
apologies, I forgot to quote. This was in response to DJ who thought that Ruby rode a sh1te race and LGR who suggested it should have been ridden from the front.
January 24, 2008 at 20:23 #137511The point is that he had the race won at the last on all those occasions when held up- he didn’t jump the last at a course with a short run-in with two horses alongside like today.
January 24, 2008 at 20:42 #137518Had a good win on KK when he won the Gold Cup so am a big fan. But Newmill was close up and he aint been showing much lately. Nickname had excuses last time sure, so had yet to show his best this term.
So what can we judge the horse on?
It was encouraging that is all, early days to say he is back to anywhere near his best.
This may sound a daft question about a Gold Cup winner, but is he sure to stay the trip?
When he won the race he relaxed, but since then in my opinion has not settled so well at 3 miles. His second King George was not his best form either, only just beating Monkerhostin.Value Is EverythingJanuary 24, 2008 at 20:54 #137520Great to see KK back today, they’ve done a great job just to get him racing again. I almost felt it myself when he clattered the 2nd last. Long road back for him after a tendon but hopefully he’ll get to Cheltenham in one piece.
