    Echo Zulu, 4/1

This undefeated and last year’s 2-year-old champion filly is only 3rd favorite in the betting line but that’s probably due to her perceived “unimpressive” victory on her 2022 debut last month. It could be due to her lack of progression from 2 to 3 or just a case of her being a bit rusty following a lengthy time off. I believe it’s the latter. This daughter of Gun Runner would not be denied and fought very hard to the line in her victory. So she has my support, until proven otherwise…

    Nest (Curlin), 5/2

Arguably the one to beat and current favorite whose victory in last month’s Ashland Stakes (G1) was most authoritative and powerful over a wet surface at Keenland. She kept extending her stride to the line and, if she repeats that performance here, she will be difficult to beat..

Others worthy of serious consideration are Kathleen O. (Upstart) at 7/2 and Secret Oath (Arrogate) at 6/1 who finished a very respectable 3rd in the Arkansas Derby (G1) against the colts.

    Value Proposition: Shahama, 15/1.

Although I’ve never seen her run, this UAE-based filly is 4-for-4 lifetime and her last run was in February where she won the UAE Oaks (G3) over 9 1/2F. It does suggest plenty of stamina for this race, but the question is speed: is she quick enough to keep up with the top fillies here? Furthermore, can she handle a wet surface if it comes up? However, she’s a G3 winner, undefeated, can stay the distance, and certainly is on par with majority of the fillies here as far as quality is concerned. A contender for placings…

NOTE: the unknown is the weather, as usual. They’re forecasting rain on race day with a high degree of probability…good luck!

Thank you for drawing attention to this.

Echo Zulu was superb in the Breeders’ Cup, but the reappearance run has to be a slight concern.

I then looked at Nest, and thought she might be a bit of progressive value – but she’s only 5/2!

One to watch for me probably.

    CAS,

It’s lasix-free. The lasix phase-out started last year when it was banned for all stakes races, including the American classics and Breeders’ Cup. Actually, it was banned for 2-year-olds starting in 2020. And, I believe, that effective July 1, 2022 the use of lasix on race day will be banned according to the new law. It’s been used for about 50 years but, finally, it will disappear much to the displeasure of big pharma…

Good to know. American racing could be worth watching once the drugs stain over it has gone.
