I live two miles from Epsom Downs racecourse and I agree with Shep that the £25 million spent on new stand overlooking the Tattersalls enclosure was a complete waste of money. It is an absolute monstrosity. At the top of the old stand there was a small type restaurant where you could get a decent lunch. From up there you had a great view of racing. Now it is like being in a 1960’s football stadiumn where it is mostly standing room only.
The stand itself looks like a warehouse and is so flimsy the roof blows off in high winds. Kempton’s old stands have much better facilities than Epsom. The main reason Epsom is safe is that the downs cannot be built upon without a new Act of Parliament sanctioning it. Without this I doubt even the Derby would ssve it as the racing there is mainly rubbish.
